Whoops! on the last page of the ole Blues calendar, so better make the most of it. Huddie Ledbetter, better known as "Lead Belly," was born in the late 1880s (the date is uncertain) in northwest Louisiana. After being recorded by the Lomaxes, he released lots of songs which have become standards, such as 'Rock Island Line' 'Pick a Bale of Cotton' and 'Goodnight Irene'. In 1949 he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and he died this day 70 years ago in Belle Vue Hospital in New York. He died penniless but within a couple of months his recording of 'Goodnight Irene' became a million seller. He is buried in Shiloh Baptist Church on the Blanchard La-Tex Road in Northwest Louisiana.
Here's that strange bit of newsreel of Lead Belly with John Lomax from 1935 - very much of its time, I suppose.

New Year and hope it's a happy one to one and all - and of course time to kick off the new Blues Calendar with the great Frank Stokes, born New Year's Day 1888 in Whitehaven, Tennessee.
'Chicken You Can Roost Behind the Moon'...another great song about chickens.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

'Mississippi Jail House Groan' is one of those remaining sides - you can hear Son House in there, I think.

However, here's a bit of barrelhouse piano from New Orleans, I suppose, courtesy of Blind Leroy Garnett who died 3rd January 1933 in Chicago, Illinois. It's great reading some of the comments on some of these more obscure tracks on YT - one Dr Pinsker says ' I found Garnett's WWI draft card. His full name was Leroy Roscoe Garnett, and his date of birth was August 6, 1897. His occupation is given as "piano player", though he wasn't employed at the time of the registration. He's living in Chicago in 1917. The absolute identifier: it says that he is ineligible to serve because he's "totally blind." '
Here's Leroy on 'Louisiana Glide'.
