Old time country blues and 12-string specialist Charlie Kyle was born 6th November 1881 in San Marcos, Texas. We've all had those Walking Blues - here's what Charlie made of them.

No more so than today, Global, as we say farewell to Washboard Sam, who died this day in 1966 in Chicago, Illinois. So much to choose from Robert Brown...how about some 'Evil Blues'?

Whoops! on the last page of the ole Blues calendar, so better make the most of it. Huddie Ledbetter, better known as "Lead Belly," was born in the late 1880s (the date is uncertain) in northwest Louisiana. After being recorded by the Lomaxes, he released lots of songs which have become standards, such as 'Rock Island Line' 'Pick a Bale of Cotton' and 'Goodnight Irene'. In 1949 he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and he died this day 70 years ago in Belle Vue Hospital in New York. He died penniless but within a couple of months his recording of 'Goodnight Irene' became a million seller. He is buried in Shiloh Baptist Church on the Blanchard La-Tex Road in Northwest Louisiana.
Here's that strange bit of newsreel of Lead Belly with John Lomax from 1935 - very much of its time, I suppose.
This is an excerpt from a 1935 March of Time newsreel (produced by Time magazine) which re-enacts Leadbelly's release from Angola Prison, Louisiana. John Lom...

There's also this rather strange but incredible footage of Leadbelly from '45 that Pete Seeger seems to have had something to do with. He was one fine 12-string player - Huddie, that is; Pete was more a banjo man, I suppose.

Thanks, Global. I was just about to mention Big Walter's passing - great track that. By the way, he died in Chicago, Illinois according to my aging you-know-what!

New Year and hope it's a happy one to one and all - and of course time to kick off the new Blues Calendar with the great Frank Stokes, born New Year's Day 1888 in Whitehaven, Tennessee.
'Chicken You Can Roost Behind the Moon'...another great song about chickens.

Phew, glad to see this is still going to go on, hopefully for another few decades. I've therefore renamed the thread so it will always be current no matter what

Well they put a few decades in, G, so up to us to carry it on. Rubin 'Rube' Lacey was a delta blues singer, songwriter and guitarist, born January 2, 1901 in Pelahatchie, Mississippi. Not much to say - he recorded a half-dozen sides in the late 20s and headed off to the ministry after that.
'Mississippi Jail House Groan' is one of those remaining sides - you can hear Son House in there, I think.

I did jump ahead with an enquiring mind, cloughie, but no Leap birthdays or death days reported in the Calendar for next month.

However, here's a bit of barrelhouse piano from New Orleans, I suppose, courtesy of Blind Leroy Garnett who died 3rd January 1933 in Chicago, Illinois. It's great reading some of the comments on some of these more obscure tracks on YT - one Dr Pinsker says ' I found Garnett's WWI draft card. His full name was Leroy Roscoe Garnett, and his date of birth was August 6, 1897. His occupation is given as "piano player", though he wasn't employed at the time of the registration. He's living in Chicago in 1917. The absolute identifier: it says that he is ineligible to serve because he's "totally blind." '

                                Here's Leroy on 'Louisiana Glide'.
I do not own the copyright to this recording. This video is for historical and educational purposesComposed by Leroy GarnettLeroy Garnett's recorded legacy o...
