12th September and Gus Cannon's back round again. Gustavus was born this day in 1883 in Red Bank, Mississippi and played Banjo, made from a frying pan and a raccoon skin, and the jug. He recorded with his jug band, Cannon's Jug Stompers in te late 20s. Here's 'Minglewood Blues', accompanied by a crackin' wee cartoon - gotta feel for the cricket.

...and if it's Gustavus' b'day, then it's gotta be Texas Alexander's too, born this day in 1900 in Jewett, Texas. Best known perhaps for 'The Rising Sun', but here is singer Alger 'Texas' Alexander on 'Lonesome Blues'. Not sure who the guitarist is, though he did record with the like of Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang among others.

The Calendar informs me that Blind Willie Johnson died on eigtheenth September 1945 in Beaumont, Texas. When I think about him and his street evangelism on corners in Texas, I wonder what he would have thought of one of his recordings flying out beyond the Solar System on Voyager. I also wonder what some future being will think when they hear Blind Willie. Good old Carl Sagan, I say.

Absolutely agree. That growl deserves to be galactically famous, and I love the contrast between his voice and (various) female partners.

Tell you what, Global; I wish they would release another R Crumb 'Heroes of the Blues' Calendar like they did back eight or nine years back - that was a thing of delight to decorate the kitchen wall for a year.
20th September is Curley Weaver's death day...died 1962 in Alman, Georgia aged 56. Curley is best known for accompanying Blind Willie McTell on some of his Piedmont Blues Classics, but he also had a loose collective of a band in the Atlanta scene in the 20s, The Georgia Cotton Pickers. They comprised Curley, Barbecue Bob, Eddie Mapp on moothie, Blind Wille McTell and Peg Leg Howell playing the fish fries and barbecues. What an outfit that must have been. Talking of which, GT, today is the anniversary of the death of Bo Carter (born Armenter Chatmon), also a subject of one of Crumb's Heroes of The Blues drawings, died this day in Memphis, Tennessee at the ripe old age of 71. Crumb also did one of his renowned LP covers for a collection of Bo's recordings, and given Bo's love of the clever sexual innuendo in his lyrics you won't be surprised to see Crumb's illustration.

Ah yes, I know his work - reminds me of the Music Hall legend Marie Lloyd.
Her lyrics were often a little on the risqué side, a bit more subtle.
One of her big hits was called "She sits among the Cabbages and Peas", the censors of the day objected , so she changed it to "She sits among the Cabbages and Leeks".

Henry 'Blind Lemon' Jefferson was born 125 years ago today in Wortham, Texas. Didn't get the recognition he deserved because he was poorly recorded, because he was difficult to imitate and because he died pretty young, found dead in Chicago under mysterious circumstances in December of 1929, possibly after becoming disoriented in a snow-storm. But he was seen as father of the Texas Blues and highly influential to the likes of BB King and Doc Watson.

I’ll take lead vocals....Because anyone can sing the blues; which segues neatly with JCs great reminder about Ali ‘the donkey’ Touré, himself a point of musical intersection - and he did so much more - for example as mayor of Niafunke.

Robert Lee McCollum, who recorded under the name Robert Nighthawk, died on 5th November 1967 aged 57 in Helena, Arkansas. Nighthawk was one of the great electric slide exponents influencing the likes of Elmore James and Earl Hooker. Here he is with his Nighthawks and a driving version of 'Kansas City Blues'.
