My old calendar informs me that Leola B. Wilson was born Leola B Pettigrew on 17th June 1893 in Birmingham, Alabama - among other names she performed as Coot Grant, and performed and wrote with her husband, Kid 'Sox' Wilson. Together they wrote a pile of songs including 'Gimme a pigfoot (and a bottle of beer)'. Here they are performing 'Come on Coot and do that thing'!

William Lee Conley Broonzy's birth date remains problematic - depending where you look he came into the world on 26th June in 1893 or 1896, though more recent research suggests 1903, and he was born in Jefferson County, Arkansas, one of 17 children of Frank Broonzy (Bradley) and Minnie Belcher. An itinerant player Big Bill eventually reached Chicago in about 1924. Here's his 'Just a Dream' (on my mind)'

Born July 1, 1915 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Willie Dixon went on to become one of the most influential of the Chicago Bluesmen, spreading the news of the blues across the world. Here he is in earlier days with his Big Three Trio, Willie, 'Baby Doo' Caston and guitarist Bernardo Dennis, drinking some whisky, After a While.

It's also piano man Georgia Tom Dorsey's b'day, born this day 1899 in Villa Rica, Georgia. Here's 'Levee Bound Blues'...

Born July 3rd 1893 in Teoc, Mississippi, John Hurt was discovered after the Harry Smith's Anthology was released, still farming in Avalon. Here's a really good clip about John from the 'Folk America' series:

Missed Memphis Slim's birthday yesterday as the internet decided to behave more like the old days when we had a modem! Slim was born John Len Chatman, in Memphis, Tennessee on 3rd September, 1915. There's some great film of this wonderful pianist especially on some of the European Blues Tours, but here he is with Matt 'Guitar' Murphy on 'I'm Lost Without You'.

According to my ageing Blues Calendar Jimmy Reed was born on the 6th September, 1925 in Dunleith, Mississippi. Here he is in Germany in the late 60s on 'Big Boss Man' on a not great vid, but one mighty guitarist.
