    Album of the year 2017

Your nominations are now being accepted for your Album of the Year 2017.
An album that has been released in 2017.

The fact you’re reading this means you know the types of music covered in this quiet corner...

Well, thank you host, what a brilliant idea.

I’m surprised by my first choice, a pleasant surprise. I’ll spare you the verbal persuasion and/or justification
    Just give it a listen:
Blue Room by the Martin Hayes Quartet.

No doubt I’ll be kicking myself when JC and Lat nominate their humdingers

      How exciting.

This will require, among other things, re-reading threads about music of a certain sort.

But my instinct is that we have already done better on this than Froots.

(Mr Pastoralguy might like to start something similar on the Classical Music forum so that I can suggest someone like Durey)

Btw - I like the new picture - but is it really you or Dominic Grievance?

My next nomination, which I don't think has been discussed here, is the latest from Antibalas, Where the Gods Are In Peace,
continuing in the style of Fela Kuti. Anyone have any problems with that?

"Gold Rush (Radio Edit)" by Antibalas from the forthcoming album Where The Gods Are In Peace.Pre-Order Now: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/where-the-gods-...

Great album for that NYE bash.

Also as a bonus here they are performing one of the NPR Tiny Desk concerts. I suspect there is a category in the Guinness Book of Records they could win with this (Max Funk in a Tiny Space?)

I'm going a bit closer to home to start with, Global...loved Karine Polwart's new one, 'Wind Resistance'. Hoping to catch her in Perth in April.

Good nomination JC, that is a fine piece of work. Will she be performing that do you think?

My next choice is a single released in 2017 - but the album that hasn't been released yet.
This fact fits nicely with the title
                "THIS DOES NOT EXIST"

Tanzanian artist Msafiri Zawose and a track named Nzala Urugu.

No apologies if someone else posted this first on here - too good to forget.

This thread has started in a lively way.

                  My first nomination is:

It's a strong contender, JC, as is this album which you brought to the forum in November:

                      Boubacar Traore - Dounia Tabolo

Quote: "On his new album, "Dounia Tabolo", Boubacar Traoré has decided to bring in musicians from the Southern States of the USA he had met on tour: Cedric Watson on violin and washboard, and Corey Harris on guitar, together with Leyla McCalla on cello and vocals. His intention was to change the coloration of his songs, while conserving their original character. From blues to folk, Cajun to Zydeco music, his new traveling companions have provided a touch of folly and swing, blues depth and discreet elegance, in a repertoire of old (Dounia Tabolo, Kanou,…) and new numbers (Ben de Kadi, Mousso,..). More than ever, Boubacar Traoré is showing himself to be the living, vital connection between Mali and the Mississippi".

Thanks for the taster track, this is an excellent nomination - the weight of Boyd behind it.

here is the link to the album:

Tana - an ancient song about a shepherd whose flock is stolen by bandits that grant his wish to play his flute for the last time before they kill him. The plaintive melody conveys his terrible fate to his beloved in the valley below.

It's certainly on my list evoking the spirits of Ali Farka Toure and Skip James, Lat. One of the things I love about the record is the very fine harp playing of Vincent Boucher and it brought to mind that there has been some fine moothie playing going on this year. Because Mark Coles is no longer around I missed Guy Davies' CD with his Italian chum, Fabrizio Poggi, but heard a track this evening on Paul Jones - Coles was always a big fan of these two.

I was also enjoying the harmonica on Taj Mahal and Keb Mo's, 'Don't Leave Me Here'...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4uGGeS3Hqk
(Not sure who the moothie player is!)

Anyway, I did want to stick in a reminder for Trio Da Kali and the ever-reliable Kronos Quartet for their very excellent CD, 'Ladilikan'. It was beautifully traditional with great musicianship from all involved and great vocals, of course. This is also one of my vids of the year:
The first single taken from the debut album 'Ladilikan' by Trio Da Kali & Kronos Quartet. Out September 15.‘Eh Ya Ye’ like much of Trio Da Kali’s repertoire ...

Ah well, if we're including vids of the year (and why not?)

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
