    The Ballad of Shirley Collins

The Directors of 'Ballad of Shirley Collins' were on with Cerys this morning, and I thought I'd take a look to see if Dundee Contemporary Arts was hosting the film, and there it was...on this evening. So I made my excuses - not really up Mrs C's street - and headed into town. Seemed all the more appropriate as the last few days we have been celebrating Hamish Henderson who travelled also with Alan Lomax, though in his case, in around Scotland. We've had a series of events about the Blairgowrie-born poet, song collector and songwriter this weekend including the rather excellent film made for BBC Alba last year 'Hamish'.

I really enjoyed the Shirley Collins film, quite a melancholy little documentary. It was fascinating to hear about her tours with Lomax in the 50s into the deep and dangerous South, her love of Sussex and England, and of course the story of losing her ability to sing. The film also spent a fair bit time on the making of last year's award-winning record. I enjoyed it very much.

I put "The Ballad of Shirley Collins, Croydon" in Google and only the Curzon, Central London came up.

I am pleased that you enjoyed the evening.

A reasonable mixture of stuff, Lat, and with Dundee getting the new V&A next year, becoming quite the cultural hub. I was really fascinated about Shirley Collins losing her ability to sing. I was vaguely aware of it from recent interviews but had wondered why she had disappeared from sight in the 70s. She ended up working in a Job Centre until she retired after she could no longer sing. As I said earlier, quite a melancholy wee documentary.
