Thanks for that, zola and Lat. The record 'The Story of the Blues' for which he wrote the sleevenotes was such an important record in my musical education though I have to say I did not know his name before today.

Blues authority Paul Oliver has died, aged 91. One of those names to me from the sixties when books and records of the blues were like gold dust.

His books are still a mine of information and have not been superceded by more recent writings. He had a tremendous feeling for the social history of the blues and for black American culture going back to the days of slavery and sharecropping. His wisdom will be missed. RIP Paul
