Just heard on 'Last Word' that the Aboriginal singer, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, has died. He came to attention about 10 years ago with his rather beautiful voice and was the highest selling indigenous performer in Australian history.

Not sure where now and he deserves a separate thread.
Very saddened by this news and realized I had never quite got round to buying him. This has now been rectified. He overcame so many challenges to achieve and his final months were awful. I would argue that he fell outside the category aboriginal soul - a genre I like but you won't find too many modern aboriginal performers who had the individuality to do likewise.

Noticed that there's been a release of a new record completed just before his death last year. The record says that the music blends together traditional Yolngo songs from Dr G's Elcho Island blended with western minimalist musical arrangements arranged by long time collaborator Erkki Veltheim. This track turned up on this month's songlines CD and I've been strangely addicted to it these last few days...not at all what I recall from his earlier releases, but great.
