Comedian Adam Buxton is a recent visitor to Peel Acres where guests have a trawl through the vast archives with Peel's son, Tom Ravenscroft. I decided to tune in as I'me very fond of the guy. One of the pieces he uncovered was this rather excellent parody of Neil Young by the National Lampoon guys. Appears to be mid-seventies - I have no idea who is playing guitar, but they've done a fine job. Sorry I'm a bit late for Mondays.

Could be Tony Scheuren who did some of the National Lampoon stuff - it's him playing Neil Young, but he was an excellent guitarist too.

Seventy years ago today the first of the 'Lord of the Rings' books, 'The Fellowship of the Ring', was published. It wasn't initially intended as a trilogy, but a post-war paper shortage was still around, so Tolkien's publishers decided this was a way to get it out there. Time for a bit of Mr Spock's celebration of Hobbits...as idiosyncratic as it comes.

....yes I like these 2 together....violin could have been a bit more forward; sound wise....I'd love to see them ( best of all would have been in that room)....nice looking violin , not sure of it's sound qualities....(but, what do I know)....Suns out....

Somewhere or other I had missed the news that some Viv Stanshall material had been released last year, but I heard the title track of 'Dogs Howl in Tune' on the radio during the week and enjoyed his great vocals, even if the backing isn't quite Bonzo!

My great pal Jackie died earlier this year. Many times over the years we sat together listening to blues and folk and jazz. I was given a batch of old blues LPs by his daughter. Also in there was a 4-CD collection from Topic records which included a Chris Wood song I hadn't heard before - apparently a version of a Was(not was) song, 'Out Come the Freaks' - just Chris plucking the fiddle. I love it. Seemed suitable for a Monday somehow.

Sympathy on the loss of your friend.

The track was a pleasant surprise. Chris Wood is often drawn to lyrics which tell a simple story about human frailty and this track is full of such vignettes… topless dancers selling antique shotguns, tape recordings of intimate activity shared to a wider audience and more. I’d also forgotten about the Was Brothers
Not your typical ‘folkie’ stereotype thank heavens. And definitely idiosyncratic enough for a Monday.

....over the last few days I've been diving into doc's on Fairports (never quite got them), Richard Thompson, Joe Boyd, Martin Carthy, Watersons, Sandy Denny....really enjoyed different feeling in my cyber space....and adding layers and understanding of things and people who are contemporaries of my time...

Chris does something similar in 'Albion', eighth. I still remember the first time hearing this song on a 'Songlines' compilation, and being stopped in my tracks by it. The atmosphere of sadness and hopelessness he creates with voice and fiddle still makes me shiver.
