Last night our local favourite cafe up the Glen, closed for the winter. They always have a final gig of the year to celebrate. Last night we were treated to a very fine guitarist, Rob Luft, performing with Albanian singer Elina Duni. They did some jazz standards but it was when they were performing Albanian and Arab folk songs together that she really shone. Wonderful voice with a great stage presence. Here she is nine years ago singing a song of Albanian exile, 'Moj e bukura More'.

I heard some of 'Late Junction' on Friday night. This track came on and I assumed it was Bulgarian, though it seemed to have a Japanese performer, Geinoh Yamashiro. Looking on YouTube it seems to have appeared on a record back in 1976 called 'Echo of the Earth'. Looking at the comments it would seem the track is called 'The Sun Goes Down' though on the LJ playlist and YouTube link it is called A1- it's beautiful anyway.

Here's a bit more information about Geinoh Yamashiro, apparently a Japanese collective formed by Tsuhomiu Ohashi. I'm not sure if they collect music from around the world or recreate that music using technology...or both.

Listened to Laurie Anderson on Desert Island Discs today.

She played a song called A Thousand Thoughts by Triakel. A traditional Swedish folk song about lost love; arranged by Triakel. Also beautiful.

There's more of Ken Jordine, about getting hungry in the middle of the night, in this first episode as well as a great story about her grandfather and Red Wing prison, in relation to a Dylan song. Bit of Terry Allen in there too - we don't hear him often enough on the radio.

two and a quarter hours; only watched about 30 mins so far and it is pitched at the right level for me, hopefully for you too. There are precious few reliable resources on this topic so thought it worth sharing.

Cerys played Japanese singer Hibari Misoro on her show this morning - this song, 'Ringo Oiwake' is about Cherryblossom, I believe. Terrific voice.
