It's Tarantella Sunday. I heard this somewhere on BBC Radio 3 during the week, but can't recall where - anyway I shazzed it, so had a look for in on YT. Apparently it tells the tale of a conflict among the fish in the Bay of Naples. Fantastic performance.
Among the popular songs on the program of Alla Napoletana by Christina Pluhar and L’Arpeggiata is Lo Guarracino, a comical and tongue-twisting tarantella tha...

    Happy Random Global Music Sunday.

For me, one of the most irritating programmes on radio is Radio 4's 'Add to Playlist' with me, Cerys Matthews, and me, Jeffrey Boakye - . However, on Friday evening I resisted the urge to switch that dial when I detected the dulcets of Eliza Carthy guesting on there, and glad I did. Her part in the chain of songs was this one, collected by Alan Lomax in a bar in Genoa in the mid-fifties:
'La Partenza (The Parting)' by Trallaleri of Genoa.

Hard to believe its all guys singing. Enjoy a sunny Sunday.

We haven't had a spot of Scott Walker on a Sunday for a while - I heard the very moving 'Farmer in the City' on the radio yesterday, from his record 'Tilt'. Such a voice!
Walker's best song in high quality sound. not compressed like the other uploads on here!

I enjoy a slice every so often, Global, but I tend not to want a whole cake, if you catch my drift?

Evie Waddell is a deaf Scottish Gaelic singer from Stirlingshire. A pal of my wife's saw her recently in concert and said she was brilliant. I notice this song was written at a workshop run by Mary Ann Kennedy - excellent, I thought.

Did you know Mrs GT used to teach sign language at our nearby School for the Deaf?
So this was extra special for us.
                    Thank you.

By the way, G, did you notice that last week's 'The Essay' had input from five deaf artists about their practice?

I heard this on Cerys this morning - 'Yuri Gagarin's Banjo' by Pete Scott from Newcastle - suggesting that Yuri was denied the opportunity to play a spot of bluegrass in space back in '61.

It was great to see the excellent Pokey LaFarge and his band in Embra on Friday - he's a bit more rocky/r'n'b these days but he did play this old favourite - 'La La Blues' - great to hear again.

Cruising around looking for podcasts meant I ended up at WFMU

Mr Sherratt, formerly of this parish, had a stint on there as a DJ (I faintly remember him telling us once or twice).
Anyway check out his former home, the Give The Drummer Radio stream - a very good cosmopolitan mix with a good breadth.
Here''s the blurb from the latest show
The finest in Micronesian doo-wop, Appalachian mambo, Turkish mariachi, pygmy yodeling of Baltimore, Portuguese juju, Cajun gamelan, tuba choirs from Mozambique, Inuit marching bands, Filipino free jazz, Egyptian kabuki theater, and throat singers of the Lower East Side.
I won't try and post a link, it's easier if you just go to wfmu.org and click...

                            and there's no DJ

I couldn't find it, Global. Not sure what I was doing wrong.
Anyway, last evening Mrs C and I dug through the old dvd crates looking for something to watch. Even by the standards of Wes Anderson movies, 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' was a pretty crazy hour and a half. However, I kept being drawn in by the soundtrack which was echoing from down the years (is that even a thing?), and which I eventually realised was Seu Jorge doing Portuguese versions of David Bowie songs. I'd forgotten about him and these great versions. Here's the closing creds:

Happy misty Global Music Sunday to all.

Poet, Jackie Kay chose Peggy Seeger singing 'Love Call Me Home' this morning when talking about her book 'Mayfloes', so thought I would choose it too.
