The one-man dynamo, Doudou N'Diaye Coumbia Rose from Senegal playing the sabar drum. He joined the small group of UNESCO designated Living Human Treasures in 2006 and was one of the first to encourage woman to play drums - setting up an all-female group known as the Rosettes. Died in 2015 at the age of 85

I found it interesting that, during a week where people were recommending tracks to aid mental health, I heard Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan three times on the radio this past week; once by Pet, once on the mixtape and another today - it really is music to stir, and yet also to calm - at least it is for me. Nothing like a spot of Tuvan singing for a Random World Music Sunday, and Yat-Kha give us it on 'Shartylaan (My Locust)' from a new release. Worth having a look at the lyrics which are apparently inspired by old shamanic text. Unique sounds complemented by the Tuvan horsehead fiddle and some fine guitar.

Cerys Matthews on Radio 6 music this morning had musicologist and record collector, Chris King speaking from a remote corner of North East Greece. Some years ago he had picked up an old 78 in Istanbul which lad to his quest to find the oldest western music, which apparently can be followed in a film released three or four years back - 'While you Live, Shine'. Here is an example of that ancient music - 'Epirotica Mirologi' performed by Alexis Zoumbas. Really interesting interview.
