A touch late for African Saturday, I know, but I was listening to 'Voyageur', the new CD of unreleased recordings of Ali Farka Toure, and it's a delight. Songs recorded between 1990 and 2005 with great line-ups and terrific sleevenotes by producer and friend, Nick Gold. Here's an acoustic version of 'Sambadio' with Bassekou Kouyate and Mama Sissoko on ngoni, and Ali's long time Callabash player, Hama Sankare, among others. Brilliant.

Peter One is originally from Cote D'Ivoire but is resident in the USA these days. One of my chums sent me a link to Peter's Tiny Desk performance - very enjoyable indeed for an African Saturday - his voice was reminding me a bit of Blick Bassy..

I was inspired by S_A's posting of Fulu Miziki to go look for a bit of congotronics, because I hadn't listened to any for ages. So here's a wee bit Kokono No 1, with no significant store-bought instrumentation in sight, but plenty booty getting shook.

I listen to this track a lot at the moment and it seems not to have been posted here...better put that right then.
"Cellist, singer, and composer Abel Selaocoe joins with the legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma and a musical ensemble in his original arrangement of the South African hymn "Ibuyile iAfrica", meaning "Africa is back" in the language of isiZulu. "

(in fact, even if it has been posted before, it is worth posting again)

Before it slips off Sounds I gave the first part of BBC Radio 3's African Classical music programme another listen, and enjoyed it just as much as first time round. One of the stand-out tracks for me was by Zimbabwe's Mbira player, Stella Chiweshe and I thought I'd post it for an African Saturday.

I know that somewhere along the line we've had something from this record because I recognise the cover - I love the guy on the right looking round the guy with the stone hammer to get a better view. Anyway I heard this track by the Ghanaian outfit K Frimpong and his Cubano Fiestas on the radio last Saturday, and have been addicted to it ever since - great vocals, wonderful groove to it and a great arrangement too - Kyenkyen Bi Adi M'awu
