A while since we had an African Saturday and I've been loving the recent compilation on Soul Jazz 'Congo Revolution'; lots of classic performers from the 50s and 60s. Nothing quite like it.
Here's Dewagon & Conga Jazz with 'Na Lingi Na Ngai Kubala Te'
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

African Saturday this week comes courtesy of a recent compilation entitled 'Mogadisco' showcasing Somalian music from the pre-war years when Mogadishu was a party city. I was surprised, though why should I have been, at how Ethiopian this track sounds - that classic keyboard in there. 'Waakaa Helaa (I Like You)' by Fadumo Qassim and Waaberi Band.

For an African Saturday, this wonderful favourite turned up on an old collaborative playlist last night - from their wonderful 'Pirates Choice' recorded in Dakar in 1982, and released to delight my life since 1989, this is Orchestra Baobab with the epic 'Ray M'Bele'.
Orchestra Baobab - Ray M'bele from the album Pirates Choice. Recorded in 1982 and released in 1989 (re-released in 2001).

Clearly the newish BBC series Noughts and Crosses must be considered - chock full of African music in yet another play on an alternative reality so beloved by dramatists over the years.
I'm not commenting on that though, just the music....

Couldn't wait for Saturday, whenever it is. This was the opening track from Gideon Coe's Afrobeat Special on Bank Holiday Monday past on BBC 6 Music - Tunde Williams with Africa 70, recorded in 1977, with Fela and Tony Allen playing too. This is 'The Beginning' - what a groove!

Another African non-Saturday from me. I was needing to listen to some Orchestra Baobab at work today and by chance came upon this film of them from 1982. Not the best quality but it is so great to see them back near the beginning.

Really loving the new record by Malian guitarist, Afel Bocoum. Really reminiscent of his fellow countryman, the late, wonderful Ali Farka Toure. Here's 'Dakamana'.

Teamsaint posted elsewhere about a list of 100 alternative 60s records, and looking through the list I was surprised that I had not heard Babatunde Olatunji - 'Drums of Passion' recorded in 1959 in New York. I had a listen on spotty and thought it was great - here's the opening track 'Akiwowo' (Chant to the Trainman)' - great drums and vocals throughout the record.
