Fela's son Seun certainly keeps the torch burning for his father's sound. Lopa played this track last night from a forthcoming record, with Seun joined by Carlos Santana on 'Black Times' with the Egypt 80!

La Fheile Padraig sona daoibhe. Happy St.Patrick's Day to you all.
As a mixed-race woman I’ve found I often have to assert my claim to the emerald isle. But now all that’s changing, says Guardian Family columnist Georgina Lawton

I would quibble slightly at her depiction of Anglo-Irish relations during the 1980s although there is some truth in it. Her quote "ish" - "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs" - is the title of John Lydon's (Johnny Rotten's) autobiography and I believe that it hails from several decades earlier during his upbringing in Finsbury Park. As is known, in the late 1980s and 1990s I was in North London Irish pubs almost weekly and at associated gigs at the likes of Kilburn National as well as at Fleadh in Finsbury Park. It was only later when I discovered that many of the concert venues to which I had orientated had been visited regularly by my not Irish mother in the 1940s and 1950s when they had not been concert halls but the locations of dry céilís.

After last night's programme about Mali, here's an excellent spot of Griot/non-griot cooperation with Toumani and Ali Farka playing live. Sensational, in my opinion.

According to the info introducing Innov Gnawa' 'Toura Toura' on the youtube vid
- 'In the early days of Gnawa, i.e. the early days of slavery in Morocco, slaves would find ways to sing songs in their native language in locations where they might be heard by a relative or loved one, from whom they’ve been separated, in hopes of reuniting with them. The Amazigh (indigenous) and Arab populations of Morocco didn’t understand these languages. The Amazigh word for “gibberish” or “unintelligible” is “agnaw” (singular) “gnawa” (plural). This is the commonly accepted story of how the term first came in use. Over time, these different ‘unintelligible’ songs fused more and more into one shared history - one of forced displacement and spiritual yearning.'
If you like this video, consider supporting the musicians and Remix ⟷ Culture by purchasing the album (digital download) and/or a limited edition 12" vinyl:h...
Great stuff for a Saturday morning...or any other time, for that matter.

Bit more gnawa-ish fusion for an African Saturday - here's ALCHIMIX performing Birimbao with Guembri (Gnawa bass), Human Beat-Box and Handpans. Interesting sound!

I think Alchimix might be a French-based North African outfit.
