Pat Thomas set was on Wo3 last night, Lat...I expect we'll see Songhoy Blues somewhere in there (v popular with the youngsters at the moment), and they're bound to show the Baobab Boys...surely!

      Interesting - thank you JC.

Among the other many names that leaped out when I did my tour of what I might have tried to see had I been there - Toots and the Maytals, Chaim Tannenbaum, Sharon Shannon, Justin Townes Earle, Altan, Cinematic Orchestra, Liam O'Maonlai/Hothouse Flowers, Jah Wobble, Andy Fairweather Low and Black Dyke Mills Band. Those, at least, are the ones which arguably lean towards this forum. I will post the poppier and rockier ones on the song thread. Needless to say, most are now getting on a bit. Fascinating to see CT touring his long awaited album. He might on paper be the stand out of the stand outs. The curiosity element! As for Toots and the Maytals all these years on, I'm not sure what I'd expect.

A nice fact about Orchestra Baobab - they began in the same year as the festival - 1970:

Well Toots still has his voice, Lat, so imagine it'll be that great catalogue of delights - I'd be in the queue. Would like to see Chaim in a wee theatre...really liked his LP last year. A voice with such longing.
Chaim Tannenbaum performs "Brooklyn 1955" off his new album on StorySound Records. Purchase on Amazon http://bit.ly/Chaim_Amazon_CDAmazon MP3 http://bit.ly/C...

Thank you for those comments. I've gone all music this weekend to try to relax. I won't dwell on it but I had a second major health scare for the second time in two weeks in the last three days. My Irish dentist who I regard as a friend having now known him for 25 years saw me urgently yesterday and to some extent he's put my mind at rest. But it has been very draining. Life is being lived on parallel lines. When I couldn't sleep in the week, I went to the cupboard of camping gear for the first time in several years and pulled out a sleeping bag and a pillow. I fell asleep in 30 seconds in the garden, not even knowing it was the Glastonbury weekend but it was if I were subconsciously somehow back there.

My longest friend of 35 years arrived today and we went for a meal. I spoke about Toots. He didn't know but he is into film. Was "The Harder They Come" a reggae "Shaft"? I am not sure it was but I mused aloud that Toots must be in his early seventies. I like stories. I feel that Chaim has been a recent person of stories. The story of his indifference about recording an album and the haphazard nature of the live performances. The story told by Joe Boyd. The story of we the people on this forum tapping into the Joe Boyd podcasts and discussing those. At Pilton. seeing Chaim would have been a must. Anyhow, we are on Africa so given Chaim's talk about Wainwrights, here is one who some jazz fans may know:

Thanks JC. A great concept for an album and a terrific track. I'm very impressed. Wonder what the main Jazzers think of it.

Where to go? Ghana? Guinea? Mali? or just all three courtesy of Ghana's ET Mensah.

Am slightly late on this one.

My father now speaks without thinking. It's fine but it can get tricky when it messes up diplomatic initiatives with everyone in mind. He mentioned to my lovely next door neighbour this week that I had been to Glastonbury ten times. She looked aghast as if to say "we will have to expect raves in his garden at any time". Erm, no. I was always under canvas for the purest musical experience and some sense of support for my pseudo religiosity. Anyhow, cornered, I pushed her. She's 62 and African-Indian. I thought interesting stuff could emerge, like discovering a different person to the one I've known. Who had she seen live? The Rolling Stones (whaaaat?), Cat Stevens, Santana, some people from Senegal and Mali. "Oh, who from Mali?". "No, Marley". Ah, yep. And especially Osibisa. She's still nice but was clearly a dangerous radical. This one is to ensure she doesn't turn her yard into San Francisco c.69:

Not quite sure about this one.

Most will either love it or hate it just as Konono No 1 received a variety of opinions:

Cape Verde's music often sounds more linked to the Americas than Africa. But anyone who has listened to Cesaria Evora will recognise that distinctive Cape Verdean sound in "Mindel de Mae Auta" from a newly released record of mornas by Tété Alhinho, and what a beautiful voice she has.

Thank you both (JC and Lat-Lit) for a discovery on my part - life has become so full of other nonsense that the time to keep up to date with anything other than classical music seems to have vanished. So, it's great to be directed towards someone I feel that I really ought to have known about but, simply, didn't, despite a past liking for Canadian singers/songwriters. A reminder of how great this forum is in broadening one's musical horizons.
