Which recalls the old joke Paul, when a visitor enquires - 'Why do you have a packet of Persil on top of your TV?'
Resident reply - 'Because we didnae huv any Ariel!'
Thought I might recount something a wee bit spooky that happened this morning. I had been looking at Carl Sagan's Cosmos on the bookshelf for a few days; so I found a sturdy chair and got it down for a wee read this morning. I loved that programme when it was on back in the early 80s - my mate had just got a video and we used to sit up and watch episode after episode fascinated and ever so slightly out of it.
Every second Friday I love to read Laura Barton's 'Hail Hail Rock'n'Roll' column and I turned to it and she was recounting a trip to a friend's wedding where, to my delight, she had to do a reading from Sagan's 'Pale Blue Dot' - 'That's here. That's home. That's us'. On the radio in the background was the Desert Island Disc repeat and Kirsty played In My life by the Beatles - one of their greats - and then I read 'In my Life' in the article - as always she has a fine take on the lyrics of songs and she manages to do a great job on the song. Anyway, it stopped me in my tracks for a moment or two. Sagan, Lennon, Barton and Kirsty Young.
Here's the article:
Laura Barton: 'You' is such an insignificant, pale blue dot of a word. Its significance comes from the love that we place upon it, the way that we deal with it
