Harry Belafonte began singing to earn money for his acting classes.
He has spent his life supporting equality and freedom.
Born in 1927, he is, quite reasonably, now retired.
This song, plus others such as Matilda, Hole in my bucket and O Island in the Sun helped establish him in the public consciousness in the 50’s and 70’s.

Another hero of my youth, G. I loved his style and his songs, and his sincerity. Keep a dry eye if you can during Scarlet Ribbons, and for those of us who still keep Christmas close Mary's Boy Child keeps the story alive. Didn't he do well in all his careers?

I recorded The Banana Boat Song off Radio 2 many years ago and at the 'tarantula' bit Annie Nightingale shrieked on air. I still have it.

'Scarlet Ribbons' is still a favourite of my old Mum, Padraig. I used to do a reasonable 'Hole in My Bucket' when enough alcohol had been taken and I could find a suitable second. Of course, Stan Freberg did a great take on the banana boat...too piercing!
"Banana Boat (Day-O)" was radio humorist Stan Freberg's take on Harry Belafonte's hit single with the same title. Freberg's 1957 tale of a picky bongo player...

Not everyone appreciated Bebop as we can see as The Little Tiger dissects the jazz of the 50s in this great bit of 50's calypso, questioning the sounds created by some of the jazz greats, while appreciating their technical prowess...'Calypso Be'. Great vocals from George Brown who sang, I believe, with Chris Barber...Barber's name seems to come up more and more as the years go by.

By George Brown, aka Young Tiger. Recorded in London on April 22, 1953, as listed by musicologist John Cowley for the Caribbean Connections collection for Ne...

Happy Calypsonian Thursday and all that jazz.

Matisyahu's official live performance video of 'King Without A Crown'. Click to listen to Matisyahu on Spotify: http://smarturl.it/MatisyahuSpotify?IQid=Mati...

Matisyahu mixes traditional Jewish themes with modern reggae.
Somewhat controversially, since this video he has dropped formal Hassidic wear and shaved off his locks but still retains core elements of his faith.

Freberg’s recordings were superb - having the collaboration with Billy May and the many brilliant musicians around the Capitol studios meant that the parodies were also well recorded polished productions. C’est si bon is a favourite of mine.

For anyone interested, I would strongly recommend this excellent, informative series of half-hour programmes on the story of Black Music in Europe from the end of the 1970s to date, which have been on Radio 4 each Wednesday at 9am:

Well worth repeated listening even if you heard them first time around.

                Woops! Possibly wrong thread?

Late on the road today, but this just came on and it seemed most suitable for a Thursday. 'Deck of Cards' given the full treatment by Prince Far I.
When I see the ace it reminds me their is only but one Prince Far I, when I see the deuce it reminds me that their were 2 versions of this song... so without...

This is still my favourite Prince Far I track though.... you don't hear much criticism of Mr Branson and his organisation -
"a pickle with no place on my plate"
                              (his laugh though)

                              Nearly Thursday innit?
