....which reminds me there was a mutilated young hare on the bathroom floor this morning courtesy of the cat - had to lever it into a poly bag (there's a sort of joke in there, though the hare and its blood were real enough).

That sounds terrible John. Lucky, when she was alive, brought in entrails of garden birds although there was also the occasional head of a mouse. Did you know that when cats leap up in the air while chasing their own tails, it always means that there is going to be a thunderstorm? I have been thinking of getting a dog - possibly a labrador or a golden retriever - but I can't really afford one. It will be a surprising step if it happens. It has never been on the cards before because I was once savaged by a poodle.

Incidentally, I see that Ena Sharples won the 2.25 at Ripon. Mind you, Alderknitty will be unbeatable come October -

You didn't jug it then? They're a special animal, the hare. Our cats get field mice - the most recent find in the morning was just the hind quarters sitting upright, with the entrails adjacent. Livened up the pie later on though.

One day these animals will get their revenge...

It is either a repeat of Miranda Sawyer's "The Spirit of Grunge" or The Judy Spiers Show on BBC Radio Devon.

I'm just hoping Max points Nick at this thread for the astute & learned discussion on their shows...one of my chums is called Mole by the way - any feline would have hell of a job dragging that lovely old lummox through a cat flap.

Yes, good luck to Nick for the next couple of weeks. I am sure that it will be fine without any assistance. Still, it's always useful when putting a programme together to know a little about your audience, isn't it. It makes it that much more worthwhile.

I will certainly listen to that programme John.

One possibility is that I will ultimately buy a crofters cottage in Scotland but I don't know whether it is a practical idea. They seem to vary a lot. It would need to be structurally sound, have electricity and hot running water and not be on a main road. They look reasonably priced and located in nice places where walks with labradors can be had on deserted beaches before vegetable growing. I wouldn't want to be many tens of miles from some shops and a hospital but a 20-30 mile or so distance would be fine.

Cleoma Falcon should have done a cover version of "Hotel California" 40 years before it was written.

Thank you for that John. It looks excellent as do the other websites I have visited today. I like the idea that the Isle has woodland as well as sea and also hills very nearby. Some say that it is a little like the lowlands so it also doesn't feel too remote.

This is quite an exciting idea to me in the longer term. On my only trip to Scotland in 1973, I was briefly in Strathpeffer which isn't far. Staying in Culloden, I also visited Inverness and went across to Nairn as well as up to Ullapool. My parents went once more - to Gairloch where that tragic accident has occurred. They recommended it and it is direct as the crow flies over in Wester Ross.

I will also ask Oilrig about Ardgour and will try to tie it in with some music so that this thread can get back on track. But thanks again for your comments. They were much appreciated - for paying off that last third of the mortgage will be "undoable".
