I'm cross-posting part of the OP from the thread The Qanun, which may interest some of the aficionados of World Music here....

There were two items of particular interest (to me anyway) the first being about Maya Youssef who plays the Arabic Qanun. I'm ashamed to admit I'd never heard of it but I found this:

I suppose I should have noticed it was on, but chance took me to 'The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff' on Drama on 3 this evening - very moving production with great performances from The Young'uns', recorded live in Stockton.

BBC 6 Radio, The Freak Zone dedicated a programme to Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

The Washington-based nonprofit record label & renowned educational institution selects treasures from their vast international catalogue that spans 4000 album and 60,000 tracks. Journey through the Smithsonian Folkways history with gospel from the Civil Rights Movement, field recordings of rural American farms and meditative chanting about dreams from indigenous people living in the Malaysian rain forest to name just a few gems

A pretty fair summary - I like the fact that a low-key staff member introduced the show and to learn more about the history of Folkways.

Very entertaining, Global. Agree about the presenter - particularly loved the 'Improvisation of Instruments'.

I notice that this evening Radio 3 is starting a 3-parter entitled 'Anoushka Shankar's Journey Through Indian Classical Music'.

I can't say that I understood all of what Anoushka Shankar was describing in the first of the three programmes about Indian Classical Music which finished last week, but I enjoyed
the music very much, and she seemed extremely knowledgeable. There's a fine playlist going with each of the programmes - I think I need to concentrate more. Must be difficult to do a series where your father is the greatest exponent of the genre, but she just about pulled it off. Nine days left to listen to episode 1 which is about Hindustani classical music, if you haven't listened in.

Rhiannon Giddens, in the third part of her excellent series, 'Black Roots', on BBC Radio 4 celebrated the life and music on DeFord Bailey, recognised as the originator of the train sound in blues harp in the Grand Ole Opry, but written out of its history. I hadn't heard of him before, but I've heard of him now. Sacked by the Opry when at the peak of his popularity, he never recorded again, but here he is in 1967 playing that Pan American, a sound that is so familiar.
