I only post 'La Mer' by Charles Trenet for a French Wednesday, because it turned up in the opening episode of the new series of 'Shetland' last night - mind you it's always great to hear!
La mer - definitely written by Charles Trenet but also with Albert Lasry (orchestra director on a Trenet version in 1947) or with Léo Chauliac on a train in 1943 or possibly both...
The earliest recording of La Mer kicking about on the internet is by Roland Gerbeau (1945)

To go back to JC's previous post - I'm guessing it was an attempt at ironic contrast given that it was the background music in a run down Shetland hotel used for human trafficking.

Thanks for the links. A nice way to start the day. Interesting to note there that Trenet wrote the song on a train and that Gerbeau was with him at the time. I vaguely wondered which other famous songs were written while travelling by train.
