'Au Port' by Camille comes courtesy of an old Charlie Gillett compilation.

I thought this was Bobby Darin's song - and a right good song too - but I had not yet heard this.

Yeah, Padraig, I first heard the song from the great Bobby Darin too, but even he doesn't beat the original. Have you heard, 'Boum', another of Trenet's classics?

This came highly recommended from someone who is a frequent voice on R3 (though not talking about French/African Hip Hop )

Often feel that hip hop is best in French - the language seems to lend itself to the medium. Not keen on his voice modulation machine bits, mind you...that bugged me in the previous track you posted by MHD too - always gets me. Like those blinkin' things Peter Frampton used to do way back when.

Francoise Atlan is French of Berber Jewish origin and sings in the Sephardic tradition. There's a fine article about her in the recent edition of Songlines Magazine. Here she sings 'Uskader' which seems to be Turkish, having travelled from the Iberian peninsula in Moorish times. Wonderful voice and ideal for a spot of cross-cultural Wednesday.
