Hmm. "Pomplamousse!". Any relation to the Private Eye misspelling "Ok Yoni"? Yoko Ono's "Grapefruit" sprung to mind.

Misspellings and misunderstandings all round it seems; pamplemousse is not a grapefruit even when spelt correctly. But I'm glad to hear mention of Yoko Ono.

                  A downbeat track today...

This is "oiseaux leo ferre" by dupraz jean paul on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.

The Birds of Misfortune by Léo Ferré

'Oiseau de malheur' (bird of misfortune), is a perjorative idiom used to describe people whose presence seems to attract bad luck and catastrophes, or, sometimes wrongly used, to describe someone who always make really pessimistic forecasts about the future - our Blessed Chancellor and Sainted Prime Minster are most definitely not such birds in either sense. C'est vrai, non?

Not strictly speaking French, but it's Joni's birthday this week - 78 on Sunday - and this live performance from the Jay Leno show turned up in my inbox this week...'In France they say, Love puts on a new face' as she says in this track from 'Taming the Tiger' with drummer, Brian Blade. Thought it might not break the rules.

A crackin' tune from Mde Ed Bolduc called 'Les Medecins' from the most recent John Heneghan podcast about French Canadian music of the 40s and 50s, where R Crumb makes valiant attempts to pronounce French.
