Just remembered that I saw a couple of weeks ago that Zizi Jeanmaire had died - a famous ballerina maybe but how many people like me would probably have never heard of her had she not featured in Peter Sarstedt’s song ?

Ballerina who shot to fame in a sensational Carmen in 1949 and went on to star in Hollywood films and the Paris music halls

It was only when she died, cloughie, that I realised she must have been the Z.Z. Jamaire from Sarstedt's song.

I only recently discovered the French baritone, Jacques Jansen, via an Oz Eloquence compilation. Sample

Good find, g, and another 'hit' for Reynaldo Hahn. I'm having a look at some other recordings of that song - new to me. Merci.

Sometimes, unsurprisingly, they sing in French in Senegal....

For a sad French Wednesday, here's the wonderful singer and actor, Juliette Greco, who died this past week at 93. This is 'Sous Le Ciel de Paris'.

You can hear a female Brel here, cloughie, as she acts out 'Accordeon'. Wonderful!

Really lovely - I think that with some French singers that on initial hearing there is a lot of vibrato but on closer listening it is not but actually the enunciation of the words in French that gives that impression.

I don't think that it's the confusion of the time being messed around, but more that my rudimentary grasp on 'O' Grade French had me reckoning that today was as good a day as any to play this delight.

Manno Charlemagne was a Haitian singer/songwriter and political activist, who died in 2017. Here's 'Le Mal du Pays'.
