Mary Coughlan

One of the greatest voices of the 1980s/1990s although I didn't recognise it at the time. Too many other priorities at the London Fleadh and in the moments that I saw her I was aware she had difficulties. Now a grandmother, she suffered serious heart and lung problems in 2016. If the last of these clips is really from 10 March 2018 in Galway, she is flippin' amazing:

I enjoyed both versions very much.

I think I get more pleasure from a good song than from nearly any other musical form because I keep coming back to songs. Irish songs are not the only gems by any means but I have to love them.

Really glad you liked them Padraig - yesterday we were watching an outoor performance by an Irish band plus a troupe of young Irish dancers, much more upbeat that those songs - a sparse but enthusiastic crowd, much whooping and lifting of the leg.
We particularly liked it when the singer shouted 'póg mo thóin' at the end of most songs.
One of the few Gaelic phrases we know....he was enjoying himself alright!

Hello everyone.

I'm trying not to use the computer as much but will keep in touch. I was forwarded to Moorfields on Tue and Wed for an urgent retina operation that didn't happen because they think now it might not be that but rather a schisis which could be age related or the genetic revelation with age related symptoms of my something of a split personality. (My interpretation - I am working on the changes to my autobiography in my head!). I'm back there on Mon where there will be more news with an eye operation or no operation depending on if it is retina.

Thanks J and G for providing my lunch time concert. First the aristocrats with their 'ordinary' reels, and the best version of Carolan's Farewell that I have heard. And then the excellent 'non-Irish' Dan Hicks and his musicians; his two back-up singers and dancers were 'not unlike' Sean Nos dancers in their expert use of a small space to give maximum movement and rhythm.
