Good question anton. Me too. On looking him up I recognised this song, and his co-performer, and I was struck by his voice and his lovely Irish. Here are the song, and the words in English.

He was also a wizard with the Kerry slides on his button key accordion.

This morning on the Breakfast show we were treated to a track by P.J. Hayes, his son Martin plus the much missed Dennis Cahill
A good way to start the day so here is another track in case you missed that one or want more of the same.

The accompanying contextual and factual info was fascinating too.

Would I be right in thinking that the dreaded R3 playlist details compilers have incorrectly credited the composition of the song to a former Irish president cearbhall ó dálaigh ……. Excuse lack of capitals

Happy Brigid's Day - certainly looking spring-like out there this morning, so maybe I'll go and have a wee jig to celebrate Imbolc.

I don't know anything about said playlist, anton, but there was a 17th century Cearbhall Og O Dalaigh, a harper and poet, and he had a hand in the song. I suspect lots of plagiarism and mistakes down the ages about it; even Robin Adair, which I believe is the inspiration for the others, is said to be Irish, Scottish or vice versa. Eileen Aroon seems to be a straight copy with Irish words, whilst Eleanor a Run is much more complicated and decorated in the sean nos style to the extent of being considered an original composition, at least by young Cearbhall, who wrote some new words. Here's Joe Heaney, a sean nos singer of note, with the last word.

Excellent Padraig …… yes I think they missed the Og ….. this is from the occasionally reliable Wik -

                          Eileanóir a Rún

Irish folklore recounts how Eileanóir Chaomhánach (Eleanor Kavanagh) eloped with Cearbhall (Carroll) the day she was about to marry another man. Cearbhall arrived at the wedding to play music at the wedding feast, and fell in love with the bride. He composed the song Eileanoir a Rún to woo the bride.

Mo ghrá thú, den chéad fhéachaint, Eileanóir a Rún
Is ort a bhím ag smaoineadh, tráth a mbím i mo shuan
A ghrá den tsaol, is a chéad searc, is tú is deise ná ban Éireann.

From the moment I saw you I loved you, Eileanóir my love
It is of you I think when I’m resting
O love of life and my first love, you are fairer than all the women of Ireland.

Well chosen, John. A case of perfect ratio of words to music and an original and pleasant presentation for the day. Lovely display, in movement and music, of the rhythm of the Slip jig, more elegant than the usual Irish jig.
