That's the stuff to give the troops!

      . . . and for a bonus ( and a change) how's this?

First World War military slang—extended forms of ‘that’s the stuff’—used in approval of what has just been done or said, or to mean ‘that is what is needed’

might get the word hounds interested.

Someone gave me this CD yesterday - "it must be yours" - well, it isn't, but the sleeve notes were written by Martin Hayes, good enough recommendation for me.
So, on a belated Friday [sometimes known as a Saturday] here is Josephine Marsh playing a couple of gentle songs: An Spideóg & Phyllis' Birthday

A new sound, Global. Not many harmonicas about and, at least here, no bass by the accordionist and all those mandolins. Gentle indeed.

On Friday morning I heard on EC a piece by Dag Wiren from Suite - The Merchant of Venice. I knew the tune as The Blue Hills of Antrim, a song that was popular in Feis competitions in the fifties - that was the time before the Fleadh was king. I have not heard it for a long time now, so I had to go searching for an example - no longer easy to find, and none up to date. Still, it's a record of what was included in local Irish culture before Irish Culture became Global (as it were). Maybe you'll give it a listen.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

20 years ago a friend lent me a copy of Strumpet City by James Plunkett. I’m rereading it..
In the book, when Fitz and Mary are married they have a small party, at which the ladies are prevailed upon to take a glass of port. In the resultant merriment, Mrs Mulhall provides a rendition of “If I were a blackbird”. Here we have the great Delia Murphy with her version of the same

It must have been sometime in the last century that I read Strumpet City, Global! I failed to notice, or I don't remember, Delia's famous song. Of course Delia sings 'If I WAS a blackbird', and she sings it twice, as if to say 'subjunctives my arse'!

The Dubs in their hairday John, not tied up, however.

For a change how's this for a twist on stand-up - strong Irish content though.

Brian talks about the Irish language, by way of his own surname. Filmed at "An Evening Of Unnecessary Detail" at the Backyard Comedy Club - for their future ...

Just for listening pleasure (because comparisons are odorous*) here is Lisa O’Neill with her blackbird song.
Anyone else hear echoes of Delia Murphy in there?

                              * odorous - especially for the pedants :-)

Very entertaining, Padraig - I want to go the hill of the sandwiches. I've passed the vid on to my Gaelic-learning wife, as names is one of her big interests. Loved the explanation of 'tri' - that explains a lot from my days working in 'The Blarney' in the Gorbals.

Sorry, Global, I can only hear Lisa - she's almost unique, except maybe for that there wondrous Radie Peat that is.

By the way, I'm pretty sure the audience are eating sandwiches and drinking wee cups of tea there.
