Quite a traditional treatment from DaoirĂ Farrell doing a song called 'Sweet Portadown' which Cerys played this morning. Really enjoyed it.

For Friday, a Christmas song in Irish. The poem tells of a legend - if you keep the fire going and leave all the doors open when you go to bed on Christmas Eve, Mary and her baby might sleep in this house tonight.

Thank you, Padraig. 'The Coventry Carol' is the subject of the forthcoming episode of Radio 4's 'Soul Music' to be broadcast on Christmas Day.
The 'Coventry Carol' tells the story of the Slaughter of the Innocents

I'm glad to see that Season 2 of "This Ain't No Disco" has been made.

Here's the first episode ("Generators of the Original"), released only a couple of days ago:

In this episode Donal Dineen travels in the footsteps of the legendary ethnomusicologist and archivist Alan Lomax to a remote stretch of the Cork/Kerry border to meet with the granddaughters of the late Sean-NĂ³s singer Elizabeth Cronin whose songs Lomax documented in the early 1950's. Featuring live performances from John Francis Flynn, Rosie Carney, CaoimhĂn Ă“ Raghallaigh & Thomas Bartlett, Percolator, Natalya O'Flaherty and Myles Manely.

I have not yet heard it all, G, but it is so engaging. All I can say is how I wasted a big portion of my life, and how little time is left. I'll never get into the life of my own native language and culture, which sometimes grieves me bitterly. When I see and hear those two ladies burst into songs at the drop of a hat, and listen to their stories and chat in the way that used to be, I realise what is lacking in my own life. But then it passes.

I'm so glad you found it engaging, and glad your sadness passes, as it should; take consolation (and pleasure) that at least we are able to listen to them at all though - and take delight in the fact that they are actively teaching to such enthusiastic learners.
To me they were the outstanding part of the programme - although I was very taken with the 16yr old poet and the lads performing in the shop window were hugely entertaining; perhaps not quite as intended...(Mrs GT says she knows what you mean too by the way)

Yes G, that was as far as I got then. The rest went a different road, mostly.

I did go on a bit earlier but it passed. Thanks for the sympathy!

Thanks, Global. That was terrific. Loved the bit at the beginning with Lomax talking about 'Cultural Equity'. And the grand daughters of Bess Cronin when Donal talks about holding hands singing sean nos, saying 'Oh you've been to Connemara, then! That's a different culture!'

The Clonakilty Samhain Festival looked a complete gas, didn't it just. Great wee programme. I'll look out some more of them. Interesting that Lomax travelled with Seamus Ennis in Ireland and the women talked about the 'River of Song'...Lomax, of course, travelled in Scotland with Hamish Henderson who referred to it as 'The Carrying Stream'...handing the music and stories on to a next generation. Great music too, of course.

Glad you and Padraig enjoyed it. I'll try and remember to post the link when the next one comes out. There is a season 1 already on YT. Variable in content but always worth a watch. I've realised he is a v good cameraman...

Roisin Elsafty, wonderful sean nos singer, with Siobhan Armstrong, old Irish Harp and Ronan Browne, Bansuri, in The Green Stubble of Autumn, Coinleach Glas an Fhomhair. A story of lost love.

A heartbreaking Conamara song. The subject is ubiquitous in Irish song: a story of unrequited love. The beloved is so beautiful and elusive that she is like ...
