She did indeed. Meanwhile I found this.
Mainly fascinating for the demonstration of poitin making.

"He had so much poitin to drink at his wake that he wasn't buried until the next day"

The music content is minimal, but this stuff has certainly been the stimulant for much music....

      Soon be Friday!
      cheers.

        I saw that too G.

        But, did you see this?

Lovely story about the unbelievable Margaret Gallagher. And - you also get the nicest Northern Ireland accent.

A good choice for an Irish Friday, mentioned already in the favourite melody thread. A historical recording from The Old Grey Whistle Test by the Chieftans, which includes harpist Derek Bell.

The Chieftains Women Of Ireland (the offshoot of Ceoltórí Chuallann) from their eponymous 1973 album. From the poem written by Ulster poet Peadar Ó Doirnín....

To keep the Green Flag flying, here is a hornpipe to follow that topical Irish Air. It is called the Derry Hornpipe, and I must have heard it a thousand times in my time without knowing it had such a title. Each year Derry has a Feis, a Festival of Music, Dance and Speech. Irish Dancing was a major element - which explains how certain tunes got into your bones after tears of attendance. It was not all traditional; classical music had a place too. The performers here were students of a Dublin Music School and their take on a traditional Irish tune might offer some interesting comparisons. I don't think they ever played for the dancers at Feis Doire Colmcille.

Gurab amhlaiidh duit, a Sheain (Gurab owly ditch, a haieen)) The same to you, John.

The Vallelys are a familiar family, and that was a great tune. There is a note on that concertina that hits a nerve, but otherwise very good performance all round. Thanks.

Here is one for Global, who probably needs a prayer to help him with his Irish. It's The Lord's Prayer, or The Our Father. I'll let Siobhan do the talking. But note - most people would call her shiv awn; she says shoo wawn. (But she's from Cork. so...)

Well G, anybody can see through this outburst. Note though, how the champagne brought things to a neat if boisterous conclusion.

Here's one to cheer the soul any day of the week, never mind an Irish Friday. Steve Earle and Sharon Shannon doing 'Galway Girl' live and accompanied by a top quality band - brilliant version. Happy Irish Friday everybody.
