Dobet Gnahore of the Ivory Coast is the featured artist for June. Here's an example of her rather neat work:

Yes. Nice and to all intents and purposes new to me. I have just been reading some articles about her. Based in Marseille since 1999 - a top city - having escaped from civil war in Côte d'Ivoire, she has made quite an impression live. Robin Denselow gave the album 3 out of 5 - doesn't he always? - and said that while it covered a lot of things musically, it lacked excitement. Apparently, on stage she is known to perform acrobatics literally, which would naturally provide a different take.
She comes back to her roots here from a hip-hop and urban perspective, having shared an award for urban music with India Arie. Her father appears to be key in this development, a long respected musician in his own right. From a personal point of view, I tend to go for someone with more oomph (Kidjo) or sensuality (Levy), hence I find Rokia Traore or Oumou Sangare with whom there appear to be some similarities, more to be respected than thrilling.
Still, an interesting introduction - and given the variety of influences I may possibly place her for now in the same file as, say, Nneka who is ok enough.
Thanks.Last edited by Guest; 06-06-11, 23:14.
