Harry Dean Stanton again! I had the careless notion that he was a country singer. Reading his Wiki I now realise that I have seen quite a few of his films. He had to choose between singing and acting, he says. I have to admit that I am more impressed by his singing now that you have introduced me. But then, his singing is an acting performance, isn't it?

As the same song has popped up twice, we'd better have the lyrics :

        Return, return
        This impassioned love unruly
        has me all contorted
        to return.
I'm on my way to madness
        as all within me tortures
Yet I do know how to love.

Long time ago we broke up,
But only now I admit how I must give up.
You were so right on your part,
I feel the call on my heart
        and I'm dying to return.

        Yes! Return, return, return
        once again into your arms,
I will go wherever you are:
I humble myself, yes humble myself
I long to return, return, return.
Thanks JC - I keep meaning to watch that film....that was a terrific performance

'Tú Sí Sabes Quererme' by Natalia Lafourcade with Ruben Blades and Mare Advertencia has a bit of the feel of Manu Chao about it, but a great Mexican tune for a Tuesday.

                          Lydia Mendoza sings Mal Hombre
This is her most well-known song, and, I suspect, formed part of her set when performing at the inauguration of Jimmy Carter.
A completely inappropriate title for the well-meaning peanut farmer.
Her nickname was La Alondra de la Frontera - The Meadowlark of the Frontier.

Lydia is quite rightly on this thread but she was known as "The Mother of Tejano Music", an amalgamation of traditional Mexican, Spanish, German, and Czech music which only goes to show how inter-connected the genre is...

It reminded me of this BBC kids' educational programme that was around when the weans were growing - I like to think it was inspired by Lydia...probably not!

A cheery song, but the lyrics are a bit darker...

a group of smugglers show up at the customs border.
They claim not to be carrying any 'stuff' and demand the customs officers help them. Instead, they are searched, 'stuff' is found, and confiscated. The result is a shootout during which 3 smugglers and 1 customs officer died.

A Live recording of " Minas de Cobre" performed by Calexico & ORF Radio Symphonieorchester Wien at the ORF RadioKulturhaus in Vienna.
Calexico have a variety of influences - I think we are safe that this track is definitely Old Mexico Folk song influenced.

If you've got a nagging feeling you may have heard it before, Calexico tracks featured in both The Sopranos and Breaking Bad
                                (no? oh well, never mind...)
