I don't know what to do because you have all done much better than me and I am running out of ideas.

I so want it to be South American Tuesdays but that seems a bit feeble.

It's a big continent, Lat...Chicano music's getting a bit coverage lately and this got a review in 'Songlines', though I feel it's the more 70s Californian sound of Mexico...reminds me a bit of Santana, actually.

Interesting, JC......I find Santana so difficult to place from a British perspective. My Tony Brown book "The Complete Book of the British Charts" informs me that they had eleven there between 1970 and 1978 but I can honestly say I never met a white British man - I use this term advisedly and a tad ironically in view of the environments in which we were brought up - who was an enthusiast. Fast forward to 2017 and as I mentioned before my early 60-something African-Indian neighbour mentioned them alongside among others Cat Stevens in a difficult conversation (that is often the case with the first) about music. Like removing clothes (if such things matter). Yep, it made sense. The global dimension and fascinating to me in that it contextualized her way back. "Samba Pa Ti" I said tentatively. She helped me out with the stumbling pronunciation. We became closer but more distant because we had come closer in that conversation. What I really aligned with was the cultural context. It categorized Santana in some way to my satisfaction but I'm still not sure I really get it. It's nebulous. She's a good neighbour and on occasion interesting - "love and sex earlier; other stuff later" she said. My father chuckled boyishly, wholly oblivious to the cute but determined audacity.

I've been re-listening again to 'History of the World in 100 Objects' this last few weeks. There was an Olmec face mask yesterday; though Neil McGregor never mentioned anything about Olmec music fragments having survived from 500bc...unbelievable that he doesn't know everything, just most stuff.

Now there's a good idea for a thread - music Neil McGregor might not know.

            For example...

I thought it was the appearance of one of those Mexican wrestlers near the end of the video, Global. Since we lost Mark Coles we don't get nearly enough Cambodian stuff. Fab. Haven't seen the doc...might have to wait till after tea.

In the meantime and still on an Olmec theme - by the way, did you know that the Aztecs called them Olmecs because they came from Rubber Country, which is what Olmeca means in Aztec...Neil McGregor knows that. Anyway here's a fab wee vid of Olmec related stuff. At least I assume it is as I don't understand Aztec. Better give Neil a call.

I found out this isn't Mexican...it's Rio Mira from the Colombian/ Ecuadorian border which is a wee bit away, but they kept singing about sombreros and I was convinced they were Mexican...silly me. :esmg: Crackin' tune for an Ecuadorian Tuesday.

An orderly cross-cultural mix which, it is hoped, may be of passing interest to certain forum members.
More Mexican music performed by Scottish bagpipes band during the Tattoo on first Sunday of October.

Nice one, GT. They're all getting into Mexican Tuesday, even Radio 4 extra this evening with a programme aptly called 'Ay Mariachi'...
Hustling troubadours hit Mexico City by night. Neil McCarthy enjoys a mariachi.

...R3 even joined in this morning with a spot of Aaron Copland's 'El Salon Mexico'. Keep it coming.

just your standard 7 mins 7 secs Mexican dirge about murder, revenge, sadness and poisoned chicken.
                              Happy Mexican Tuesday.
