and the accompanying article by Robin Denselow

You'll find the whole album on Spotify. generally Tuvan singers with a 7 octave range duetting with Desert Blues boys deserve our support I think. Especially when they're great.
I'll just sneak this old track by her which illustrates her range of work, never mind her vocal range

Dust-to-Digital is directed by the husband-wife team of Lance and April Ledbetter in Atlanta, Georgia. Dust-to-Digital began its mission of creating access to hard-to-find music by producing high-quality books, box sets, CDs, DVDs, and vinyl records.

3 reasons for this nomination, Washington Phillips is a rare find, and, although these recordings were made nearly 80 years ago, the album was lovingly assembled and released by Dust-to-Digital in 2016. Dust-to-Digital are the second reason; themselves a rare creature in the modern age; true enthusiasts dedicated to the art of preservation and discovery; real labour of love; long may they continue. Finally, a plug for Red Lick Records who distribute Dust-to-Digital in the UK and are another outlet worthy of support. Pre-internet days I remember the thrill of their list appearing through the letter box, and the (admittedly anorak-ish) greater thrill of poring over it, taking a chance on an unknown artist based on a brief review or a half-remembered track from somewhere else. Great days. Great music.

For a long time I imagined it was only the Late Junction posse who listened to Ólafur Arnalds, promoted ably by Fiona T, with occasional help from Verity Sharp and the upstart Max R (I know you're there OP).
Perhaps the producers of Broadchurch were LJ listeners too - we'll never know, anyway they picked up on him and....well, it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference to the quality of his output although hopefully he now has a wider audience.
This is Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir singing.

Island Songs was an ambitious project, 7 songs recorded in 7 weeks at 7 different locations. See what he did there?
Nominated as a tribute to (Fiona T of) LJ, to Ólafur Arnalds whose work I've generally enjoyed, not just in 2016 and because I still don't think he gets enough exposure.
Although there is another Broadchurch series on the way (Y A W N)
Hah, some of my imaginary contacts have suggested that the Sainkho Namtchylak disc could be from late 2015 but I'm not going to be picky. Your clever inclusion of The Guardian review from mid January 2016 is sufficient documentary evidence for nomination status for 2016. I have no quibbles whatsoever with Washington Phillips - great recordings : I especially liked your link - and Olafur Arnalds. Nomination 12 is Cigdem Aslan's "A Thousand Cranes". Here is the short review - https://www.theguardian.com/music/20...-cranes-review - from Mr Denselow. It is difficult to find links to the tracks on YT so along with the trailer I am including two new links of her with her long-term collaborator Tahir Palalı:

        You're right Lat

definitely 2015. Well, at least we've had a listen and a chat about her. Nomination withdrawn.

          Oh.

That was a strong contender for album of the year.

Still, better to know now and thank you for your research.

To be honest, I had some doubts about Rokia Traore but I reckon Feb 2016 unless anyone says otherwise.

We are looking for seven further nominations beginning with a replacement for number 9.

          OK.....let us try this one.

          New:

Nomination 9 - Papa Wemba - Forever de Generation En Generation

          Tsunami - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOd68QP06Cc

Released in 2016. New or not? I think new even if it name checks prior work circa 2010.

The tracks were almost completed before his death and then finished in the studio.

I like what I am hearing of them. Not sure if it has had a full British release yet though?

There are some further tricky questions coming up.

Should we have Chaim Tannenbaum and/or John Prine?

I assume we will be having Chris Wood???

It is back to that question - "what is world music?"!!!!

Thanks Global...I think Mrs C would go for that one if she had a vote. Really enjoyable, evocative record.

I like Bombino and I think 'Azel', his record of a few months back is really a bit different from the standard desert blues, essentially because he is such a fine guitarist...also I really like his vocals. Here's one of my favourites:
              Inar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zACJFsldp0

Another record that I enjoyed last year was 'Thrace', though it might be a bit 'classical' for this section. I think the quartet is made up of a Cretan and a couple of Iranians and the leader Jean-Guihen Queyras, and it is influenced by Thrace in Turkey. See what you think.
O francês Jean-Guihen Queyras (Violoncelo), o grego Sokratis Sinopoulos (Lira) e os irmão iranianos Bijan (Zarb) e Keyvan Chemirani (Bendir / Udu / Zarb) são...

Thank you for these JC. That Thrace CD is a very good selection, I think, because it crosses the more rigid boundaries as you imply. I am now thinking that this could go to a list of 30 because we haven't as yet had comments from GT and other people on the latest lot I have included, nor on the Chris Wood disc, nor on anything else that people have enjoyed. I know that there is a Konono No 1 CD but it is on familiar lines. I do have some personal selections from those posts above - I would like to see some but not all of them included.

                            Currently:

                            1. Baaba Maal - The Traveller
                            2. Kate Tempest - Let Them Eat Chaos
                            3. Calypso Rose - Far From Home
                            4. Elza Soares - A Mulher Do Fim Do Mundo
                            5. Various Artists - Songs of Separation
                            6. The Gloaming - 2
                            7. Shirley Collins - Lodestar
                            8. Djelimady Tounkara - Djely Blues
                            9. Papa Wemba - Forever de Generation En Generation

                            10. Washington Phillips - Washington Phillips & His Manzarene Dreams
                            11. Ólafur Arnalds - Island Songs

                            13. Rokia Traore - Ne So
                            14. Kristi Stassinopoulou and Stathis Kalyviotis - NYN
                            15. Bombino - Azel
                            16. Thrace featuring Jean-Guihen Queyras - Sunday Morning Sessions

I've been listening to the Chaim Tennenbaum CD since your reminder...I seem to have ignored all Joe Boyd's advice forgetting that the long-awaited record appeared. But I am loving this record...the opening track, 'Farther Along' is what will take me on into 2017 with a smile in heart...'Still cheer up my brothers and live in the sunshine, we’ll understand it all by and by.' What I'm trying to say, Lat, is that it certainly deserves inclusion and I deserve a slap for my lack of attention.
'London Longing for Home' feels like a less-low life version of a Tom Waits classic, and it has those beautiful bits of Chaim singing 'Shenandoah' throughout it. Beautiful!

                                Thank you very much.

So that's 20 and we are going for 25 or 30. In addition to the other bits and pieces, there is an Afro Celts CD to ponder but that's more than enough suggestions from me. I await GT's comments with interest. (Warning: I am persuaded by Miramar and, erm yes, the Roberto Fonseca - I believe our good friend Tony Allen is involved in one of the others too)
