    Songlines Polyphony 10

In each issue of Songlines there's a Top of the World CD with ten tracks from recently released records followed by a playlist of 5 tunes chosen by a guest. This issue it's the turn of singer Katie Melua. I've heard of her before but am unfamiliar with her music. However seems she was born and brought up in Georgia and she has included 3 very fine pieces of Georgian choral singing among the 5 tracks. So Songlines has then compiled a collection of what they term '10 Essential Polyphonic Choral Albums'. I've been having a fine time working my way through on Spotty - records from Georgia, Albania, Sardinia, Bulgaria (of course), among others. My favourite so far has been the Georgian Women's choir Sathanao.

Thought I'd start to put a few tunes in a playlist. If you'd like to add a few choice polyphones please do...or just have a listen!

I'm enticed. All I need to do now is catch up on Cerys, Kathryn and Faure and recall how to operate Spotify in full. I have Maqruli on which is mighty fine.

Coming along nicely now JC - I'm not convinced everything I've added is polyphony, so feel free to weed out any that don't make the grade. The Sacred Harp singers are a rich vein - tricky to pick; and Georgia (non-US) has strong claims for leading the charge, with interesting side shoots in Corsica (not just those A Filetta boyos).

              Here it is again

Know what you mean, Global, but it's certainly worth the effort. My favourite track from 'World Routes on the Road' (ah! remember World Routes he said rhetorically)was a bit of Georgian polyphony by Riho called 'lazhghvashi'.

This isn't them, though it is 'lazhghvashi' but it is glorious.
Svan song "Lazhghvashi", Performed by: Islam(Eptime), Eka, Vakhtang, Beshken, Nana, Giorgi, Anano Pilpani and Nikoloz Darchia (Nana's son)Svan folk Music ins...

I think you may also approve of the hats, Global!
