Jones's career was unusual in that she didn't succeed in the soul era but rather became popular - albeit in a niche way - in middle age. Full credit to the Daptone label for enabling the soul tradition to be revived - just - with several forgotten artists in the past few years. Sharon Jones was absolutely central to the movement and always fought a hard battle.
