    The Sound of Soweto

    Tuesday 15 November
    Radio 4 - 11.30 am

Poet Thabiso Mohare explores the role of music as defiance in Soweto, South Africa's oldest township, home to more than a million people outside Johannesburg.

This the first of a two-parter, the second part of which presumably to be broadcast a week hence, is repeated on Saturday 17th at 3.30.

Thanks S_A. I was delighted to hear a trail for this on R4. On the recent 70 years of World Music on Wo3 I was very surprised to hear South Africa and Soweto in particular missed out of the discussion. Looking forward to this...didn't realise it was a two-parter.

Really interesting couple of programmes taking us through the history of the townships and the effects of the group area act up to the present day, interlinking the crucial part played by music as a force for change. And great to hear the Soil playing Unspoken Words.
Award winning Accapella singing sensation The Soil from South Africa whose music can best be described as ‘Kasi Soul’.The Soil strives to fuse their voices t...

I love that track too, JC. It is fantastic.

A very informative two-part series with some wonderful music clips.

But I would have liked to have seen a track list.

Me too, Lat - even the Nancy Jacobs track was a bit difficult to find. And there was some very fine South African Jazz in there, largely unannounced. I've been getting the old Indestructible Beat of Soweto LPs out and giving them a dust off - what sounds! And on the topic of SA, our old pal Mzwakhe Mbuli has made a reappearance with a song against racism in South Africa. Great to hear him in such good voice!

                Good stuff.

I got out my South African maps to have a look at the places mentioned (something I should have done long ago) and also had a spin of "Next Stop....Soweto - Township Sounds From the Golden Age of Mbaqanga". I thought the jazz influenced music in the first episode was best but the gospel tinged soul/funk clips in the second were very interesting too.
