Thanks for pointing me to 'Planet Waves', gurney...hadn't listened to it in ages - Robbie's playing on it is great throughout - still feels fresh.

Richard Williams' review of a new Bob Dylan book by Ray Padgett:

I don’t imagine I’m alone in sometimes glancing at a stack of books about (or by) Bob Dylan and thinking, OK, that’s enough now. The last two new volumes, bought hot off the press…

Thanks, JR. Great to see Bob pick up the geetar again. He's an inspiration. I half-expected him to jump in the air at the end.

For no particular reason I found myself playing the mono CD re-issue of "Bob Dylan", his first LP, recorded 1961, issued1962. I hadn't played it for ages. A virtuoso solo folk/folkrock debut. He was about 20 and I was about 12 when it appeared but I almost certainly didn't hear any of it until several years later.

It occurred to me that I might be embarking on an unplanned, late-in-life chronological traversal of his complete oeuvre .... see how that develops.

Could take you a wee while, gurney, but I'll be interested to hear any thoughts you have as you go along the way. I was back on 'Planet Waves' again a couple of nights ago - it was you who brought my attention back to it a couple of months ago, after Robbie died.. I love Bob's voice on it - here's 'Wedding Song'.

You are right, of course. See how far I get. I did read War and Peace a couple of years ago.

Re Wedding Song: it struck me that it starts off sounding a bit like House of the Rising (Risin') Sun - which is of course on his first album just mentioned.

Thanks, JR. I tuned in for a bit of 'No Direction Home', but hadn't realised 'Shadow Kingdom' was on too. I haven't seen it, but will be catching up later.

Mixing Up the Medicine - Eclectic compendium for Dylan completists. Expensive but had to be. Just arrived.

Here's Charles Kaiser's review of the 'Mixing Up The Medicine' from the Guardian. I have to say I'm loving it.
The Dylan Center in Tulsa offers a read as endlessly fascinating, as vital to the American story, as its subject himself
