Hope I'll get to see him again one of these days, gurney. One of the BBC6 jocks is playing the whole of 'Bringing it Back Home' later this afternoon. Thought I'd visit Bob's 115th Dream, and well worth it.

Here's Bob in solemn mood fronting an orchestra on 'Ring Them Bells' from Japan in '97.

I noticed that BBC Radio 4 is running a series on Bob this week in that space after the one o'clock news entitled 'It Ain't Me You're Looking For: Bob Dylan at 80', starting Monday at 13.45.

Just listened to the first of the Radio 4 programmes 'It Ain't Me You're Looking For', and very enjoyable it was. It hadn't occurred to me that 'Blowin' in the Wind' was based on the old 19th century spiritual, 'No More Auction Block For Me'.

I was looking at that great bit of footage of Bob from '64 from a film that must have been part of something called 'Quest' on Canadian TV. There's a great bit of film of him doing 'The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll'. But I noticed this, from the same programme; a live version of 'Restless Farewell' - just around the time when he decide he was 'not giving a damn'!
Here's a beautiful version of what is in my opinion one of Dylan's most underrated and quotable pieces. This was recorded on February 1, 1964, at CBC TV Stud...

Today's programme included the obvious observation that Blonde on Blonde stands for B o B - a fact which over 50 years had never occurred to me or I had forgotten along the way.

Likewise. It had never occurred to me until I heard the programme today, gurney.

Great film of one of his greatest songs, JR, helped by the subtitles - loved them. I've been listening to a lot of Dylan this last couple of weeks and still cannot get over how many great songs he has written and how wonderful they often sound.

I remember a friend years ago. We visited their house called "Idiot Wind" and their baby daughter was called Joanna. (We might have followed suit when our daughter came along but it seemed like copying. She did get it as a middle name)

'Shelter from the Storm' would have been a good name, gurney...for the house, not the wee one. I thought episode 4 of the 'It ain't me you're looking for' was the most fascinating yet...I like this guy Sean Latham who is narrating the series.

By the way, there's a couple more programmes on R4 over the weekend - a play about some bobcats called 'Dinner with Dylan' - https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000qhgn and 'Archive on 4 - Bob Dylan: Verbatim' - https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000wbyw

Reminds me that when teaching my German A Level class I sometimes couldn't resist playing them a Dylan track to illustrate a point. We were studying Kleiner Mann, Was Nun by Hans Fallada in which a young couple are contending with the economic and political turbulence of pre-war Germany - the storm. Their marriage was their shelter. "Come in, she said ...". Thirty years later I bumped into an ex pupil who still lives nearby and as we reminisced she reminded me of my Dylan excursions during German classes.

...and listening to that, JR, realised that we missed Martin Carthy's 80th birthday yesterday, three days in front of Bob's. Happy birthday Martin.
