    Angus Grant 1967-2016

Very sad, and unexpected news of the passing of Angus Grant , of Shooglenifty.

A wonderful musician and entertainer, with a unique stage presence.

Festivals just won't ever be the same again.

    RIP Angus.

Sad news. He wasn’t on my radar, so I don’t know anything about him or his music.

    RIP

very sad indeed, and at such a young age.
Shooglenifty I would say, had that priceless asset of not being quite like anybody or anything else. They put together their very own sound, " Acid Croft", and they are an excellent band both live and on record.
I have had the great pleasure of seeing them live a few times, and joyous occasions they were. Their music is well worth investigating.

Yes, 49 is no age. Good that you got to see them a few times. Cancer, I suppose.

Thanks Sainty. Only saw them once, supporting Tinariwen in Perth five years or so back. Shooglenifty were a bit Jock Rock for my liking but he was certainly a great stage presence that evening and he and the band had quite a loyal following in the crowd.

            Sad news.

As a matter of interest, who are your favourite current Scottish bands, JC?

That is, bands rather than individual performers?

Also, Irish, Welsh, Canadian etc because there's Calan, Genticorum etc etc?

Afro Celt Sound system played a couple of tribute tunes, just written, to Angus on Radcliffe's Folk show on R2 tonight - most heartfelt and affectionate.

Favourite Scottish Band of the moment - has to be Lau, Lat! If you go solo then King Creosote is doing some very very fine stuff and Karine Polwart, Alasdair Roberts and James Yorkston have been doing some terrific work with other musicians e.g. Yorkston Thorne Khan, and the Songs of Separation Collective.

Re Irish - sorry to be predictable, but the Gloaming are the only ones on the block - their show in Edinburgh a couple of weeks back was mindblowing.

Most of the Scottish music, no all of the scottish music I hear live is at Wickham. Probably the band I enjoyed most in the last few years, other than Shooglenifty was Session A9, who were excellent after the traditional overnight drive down. I really ought to catch up with them again, thought they were class.

Saw Skerryvore this year, very much Jock Rock, I would say, but good entertainment, and not without a touch of class.
We had Karine Polwart down there a couple of years ago, playing in a village hall late ( at the same time as KT Tunstall, no competition !) and she really is the business, as you would expect from her records.

As for Irish, ( sorry its amateur hour with me joining in) but of the bands I have seen recently, Dervish are a class apart. sort of connected, Wickham was lucky to get american band Cherish the Ladies this year, who bring a decidedly up front approach to Irish traditional music, and were indeed very classy.

Oh, and since you ask,and unconnected really, absolutely outstanding this year was Gretchen Peters . Top drawer.
