Oh I don't know Richard - I hear plenty long stuff on that Breakfast and it would certainly go down well with a morning cup of tea in my house - those glorious images, that haunting guitar, the crying moothie and the voice - poetic gem.

And while we're at 70, I see Martin Carthy is 70 today - unfairly, I think, still better known in some circles for the songs he 'gave away' to those two other upcoming septuagenarians - happy birthday Martin.
A very nice traditional English tune. Sung by Martin Carthy and accompanied by Dave Swarbrick on the Mandolin. This was recorded in 1966, very early on in bo...

The old folks and I are looking to move. Being forced out really. I've been trawling the websites of estate agents in Sussex. I want to be near Lewes, but cheap obviously, a few miles or so, as it has the Lewes Arms and the John Harvey Tavern, not that I drink a lot of real ale these days. It is the ambiance. I also think of it as the Glastonbury of the South East.

If you get the time, try to do the walk from Lewes to Eastbourne via Alfriston. Only 20-something miles and spectacular. Alternatively you could go up to East Grinstead to see if Anais Mitchell still has her songwriting school there. Might as well sneak in a spirited clip even if irrelevant:

1984 is a song that cleverly fuses George Orwell's novel "1984" with the times of today also adding to the punchline of Prince's 1999. Probably one of the m...

.......Of course with Desolation Row one also thinks of the epics "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" and "Highlands". Although the latter came many decades later, it is one to make you laugh as well as think.

Our pal moved to Seaford near Lewes - so the family headed for a visit a couple of Octobers ago - to the deep south, Lat - it was a visit to a seaside town out of season - closed amusement parlours, sad looking fish and chip restaurants ( don't recall a mushed pea in sight - out of season too) - and bucketing to boot (not with sand) - and strangely I remember hearing the opening line about selling postcards of the hanging going round in my head, not that I think anything of that amount of interest was likely to happen there - no blind commissioners, no fishermen throwing flowers.

Erm, yes, southern seasides out of season. I know them from my childhood Christmases. Dad's side of the family eventually settled Margate way and a walk along the front before turkey was Tracey Emin on one of her miserable days.

Course it got even worse when Dreamland became Bembom Brothers. Tip - Never ride on a big wheel after a traditional English breakfast. As for Seaford, it is near to Newhaven so most people there see it as the great escape. Their faces fall as soon as they discover the beauty of Dieppe though.

I'm thinking something with a bit of mystery - Battle or Rye or off the High Street in Uckfield - it doesn't have to be coastal. Don't the gurkhas train at Firle Beacon? Mr S might bump into Joanna Lumley.

Favourite album, I suppose, will always be Blonde On Blonde. It may not be the best (though it's certainly one of the best), but it's always 'the one' for me.

Favourite song is Idiot Wind: Dylan is at his best, imo, when he's angry.

Oh, yes, Dylan - Best album is "Blood On The Tracks". Most underrated is "Desire".

Not far away on that one Mandryka -
Positively 4th Street another fine example with those withering final lines -

Yes, I wish that for just one time

Best LP probably Highway 61 for me - I mean it's just one great song after another - Queen Jane, Takes a train to cry, Thin Man, Rolling Stone and on and on to Desolation Row - so probably that's the top of a very tall tree for me. Most underrated: probably 'Slow Train Coming - not perfect but some great songs not least 'Precious Angel' one of my Dylan favourites.

Can you just clarify that this thread is for Bob Zimmerman only? Because Bob Johnson of that fine Preston band The Bobcats (formerly the Lune Street Gassers I think) is also 70....

Ther are other 70 year old musical Bobs too I am sure...

Hey - Bob Johnson is very welcome on the string - after all, before relocating to Preston he did produce the aforementioned Blonde on Blonde, Global - and we've had a Septuagenarianish Martin and likewise a Simon - more the merrier I say - don't you?
Bob would doubtless agree!:cool2: Happy birthday BJ!
