Enjoyed the Lady Maiserie crew - had me thinking of the Beach Boys at times, which is no bad thing in my book. Good to hear forum favourite Derek Gripper get the award for Best African record in the Songlines award, and of course no argument for the award to The Gloaming albeit in the Fusion category.

I fair enjoyed that Spanish crew 'Viguela' - heading for WOMAD's Charlie Gillett stage this year - I'll be looking to hear a bit more from them come summer. Fine show...I'm getting a liking for KT's delivery style.

There's no doubt KT is hitting form and gaining in confidence.
That was a good show on Fri. demonstrating her wide range of interests and subject knowledge - and a very easy interview with the clearly talented Samia Malik

Very enjoyable Wo3 on Friday night. Really enjoyed Martin Simpson and his stories, and his choice of tracks. And KT gave us a fine collection of tracks...Korean's 'Black String' sound like potentially fine guests for next week's programme.
Kathryn Tickell presents a live studio session by Martin Simpson.

I couldnt get past the first track JC -
              (1) I am a curmudgeon of the highest order
(2)I've reached the limit of the number of times in my life that I can listen to that track, admittedly a good version.
When I get round to skipping past that, I'm sure I'll agree; but remember point (1) above, there's no guarantee.
As an alternative and because it kind of builds on the last Wo3 I give you this instead

              and it is also wonderful.

Eek - so, yes, it's all read and I'm so desperate for a point on which to radio radio coalesce. I've told myself Mark Coles - good, that's a strong 8 - but I'm Joe Boyd on a 9 and the DJ Zimmerman's off this scale. Give me the ability to scout - no, make that power - and I'm bringing in a newby under 40 who is amayzzing. I know I can do it but no one will let me so to be completely obtuse I propose Paul Sherratt. It was this and that and often that but I-a liked him and no doubt it weirdly kind of lingers. 9.25. Even 9.35 if, 77, he gets off Twitter.

                Shall we?.......

I think we must : I so liked the wound created by Mclaren and Lydon - this is the truly revolutionary antidote:

                Elvis Costello - Winter Song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDL7grx5OXY

It totally works because Costello could have written it - it's uncanny - but it still needs a higher plaintive voice.

I'm still very glad it was done

Well it's definitely not my favourite song, GT, but perhaps I haven't been pummelled by it over the years - kinda insipid, but I wasn't going to let it run my game, and I was interested to hear more Martin Simpson as I've rather avoided him over the years due to 'Martin' confusion, and I enjoyed his appearance. Great remix of Mustt Mustt. Ta.
Haven't heard PS on twitter which Lat seemed to be approving of...R3 should get Paul in to be part of Lopa's posse some night...gotta liven things up a bit, I imagine. It worked with Bobby Friction after all.

Martin had an interesting perspective on New Orleans Jazz/ Gospel.

Great show last night with KT. Lucy Duran was much in evidence. Joe Boyd and Andrea Goetler were in talking about the new record of Southern Albanian polyphony that they've recorded, and which Joe talked about in his much-missed A-Z some time back. The record's called 'At Least Wave Your Handkerchief At Me' and very beautiful indeed it sounded. Joe gave a fine insight into the music, as always, as did Andrea. Later in the show Joe also reminded listeners of his involvement in ¡Cubanismo! and played the wonderful 'pa' que gozen'. But highlight of the evening for me was Trio Da Kali and Kronos Quartet version of 'God Shall Wipe All the Tears Away' preceded by Mahalia Jackson's version...soul stirring! (Lucy's got much to do with the Kali/Kronos record).

There are at least five wows there - I'm very impressed by what is being described.

Lots to enjoy...and I never even mentioned Amadou and Mariam who were playing a recorded set...don't think you'll guess their heritage track mind you, Lat.

This was one of the best Wo3s I'd heard in many months if not several years. The way in which it was in line with some very recent recommendations of mine was almost uncanny. References, at least, to Lucy Duran - can she be back as a guest in the studio fairly soon please - and especially the interview with Joe Boyd who along with Andrea Goertler just sounds so right on the programme and indeed the station. As regular readers will know, I have been keen on Albanian music to the limited extent that I know it for quite some time.

That is, certainly enough to have acquired knowledge of the intriguingly named Gjirokastër and the surrounding regions and to know that I have a favourite musician from there in the late Laver Bariu. The new album, "At Least Wave Your Handkerchief At Me" which features the Saz'iso collective is a little different although happily the clarinet features, and the manner in which they specialize in the unique iso-polyphonic saze style of Southern Albania enables comparisons and contrasts to made with the polyphony of Bulgaria, Corsica etc.

More subtle than the Bulgarians? Yes, even if one shouldn't say it, which doesn't mean better or worse but rather it is just as interesting. The mind can actually go where it wants to whether that is in contemplation of the use of a drone that isn't provided by the pipes of Scotland, Northumberland or Galicia or in the thought of how a really other worldly Gershwin might have composed "Rhapsody in Blue", even if ethnically that might not wholly be appropriate. I'm never quite sure on these political points or the extent to which they matter.

Elsewhere, the collaboration of Trio Da Kali and Kronos Quartet on "God Shall Wipe All the Tears Away" was a clear success with Hawa Kassé Mady Diabate proving a worthy equal of Mahalia Jackson. The live set by Amadou and Mariam was strong with a good balance of the traditional and the commercial. One might think that they could have got boring by now but after a five year gap they seem fresh and they are never less than atmospheric. The inheritance track was a fascinating surprise. For those who didn't like it they might wish to contemplate what could have happened instead. They might have pitched it a few years earlier so that we had a free clip of the alright music on that advert for chewing gum.

Additionally, it was good to be told of the passing of Tom Paley; to have the Jazz Festival flagged up via the Gipsy Kings; to hear the juxtaposition of an instrumental version of mouth music and that music by voice and to have a few tracks that were a bit quirky. The Francoise Giumbert one was certainly in that category and so too in different ways those by La Peruanita and Guess What. So, yes, it was all well put together with the right sort of elements. Finally, a word on the presentation - it was strong and I am beginning to be won over to the idea that Kathryn Tickell is a right choice and probably a tad better suited to my listening than anyone we have had on the programme or indeed on Late Junction since Charlie.

By the way, Lat, Joe's A-Z, if you still have access to it, has the Albanians on episode LL. Here's a short article about the record.
Following his first visit to Albania in 2014 Joe Boyd assembled a group of virtuoso musicians and legendary singers who went under the name of Saz’iso. This October sees the release of their long…
