there's a pretty good LP here
Definitely don’t sleep on brilliant Ethiopian sax man Getatchew Mekurya. He has recently been touring and recording with the Ex and, of course, is featured…
I guess Ethiopiques 14 is the 'definitive' album from the 70's, features a version of this:
I prefer the versions on Ethiopiques 14, Spotify:

He was an extraordinary musician with a very appealing style. I always go back to what Charlie Gillett said or at least implied about Ethiopian music. It takes a while to get it and then you are totally hooked. I agree with that opinion absolutely. While it might sound ridiculous, I could almost imagine it now having been the first sort of music I ever heard. So to Womad 2009. I was there. It was almost the last performance of the weekend. My pals had gone home. It poured with rain. I was tired, about a year away from understanding it and a bit perplexed. I'd love to be there again with the benefit of greater knowledge but am grateful to have had the experience. Following that link, more from Ethiopiques 14.

RIP Getatchew Mekurya
(My Spotify account will be reactivated shortly. I didn't intend to leave it but there were a few temporary cash flow problems!)Last edited by Lat-Literal; 13-04-16, 01:24.
