    Upcoming WM on r3

Well, that title's pretty clear isn't it? You'd think a title like that would be difficult to derail wouldn't you?

We will, of course, find out.

anyway, tonight Wo3 features Songlines winner Raghu Dixit, plus other current trendy ones like Tamikrest & Bellowhead. A track from E. Carthy's new CD and a track to acknowledge JC's recent posting re Robert Johnson. full listing
here. Couple of potentially interesting things - Natalie Merchant & a brass band on the last track, and
    Dr. Victor Olaiya's International All-Stars.

Then Fela Kuti's son Seun has the whole of World Routes to himself on Sat afternoon.

Well anyone with an album called Orange Fish Tears deserves a listen, but I refuse to get distracted....no, he isn't appearing.

That Raghu Dixit session was really excellent I thought - and Eliza Carthy's coming up in a couple of weeks with MAK - that's a crackin' track 'Blood on my Boots'. The Robert Johnson cover was excellent too but I couldn't believe that SMOD from Mali, I think Lopa said, were not Manu Chao. Didn't catch the beginning or the end - only the middle.

By the way, I thought Andy was coming up from Siberia - that's what he said at the end of World Planet - wonder when that'll appear.

For obvious reasons, I haven't heard any of these yet. However, Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 were storming at Womad - when was it? - 2 or 3 years ago? - anyway, it was the final Sunday, and virtually last on, and the crowd went crackers. Very very vibey.

World Routes - 11th June... In which Lucy mainly goes for lunch

World Routes Academy mentee (what a dreadful word - can't we call him 'manitee' instead?) Hari Sivanesan and Lucy Duran discuss the Tamil Sri Lankan diaspora. Apparently they also take a walk down East Ham high street to try and find the best South Indian lunch. If I was them, I'd run down East Ham High Street with my hand firmly on my wallet or other valuables. I bet there are some good lunch venues though. I also bet the word 'vibrant' is (over)used.

Do they play any music? Well apparently Hari Sivanesan is joined by North Indian sarod player Soumik Datta so there will be some music.

A music academician and a young WM star walk about a bit, have some lunch, then play some spiffing music in a school in West Ken.

              world routes on a budget...

This is a good thread. Hope it becomes a regular fixture.

....the title is pretty clear. I am just a bit concerned that I haven't duplicated it. I see this as the thread for World Routes and bits and pieces of World on 3 as an alternative to the MAK and Lopa threads if people wish to use it, plus anything else that crops up specifically on 3.

On this basis, Guo Yue might have been placed here rather than the thread on the wider schedules. Early days - and we can't be too rigid on these things or expect to get everything right. For what it is worth, I will probably justify it being on the other thread on the basis that he is semi-classical!!!

....This has probably been posted umpteen times before but it seems very relevant. Archives of 10 years of world music from Radio 3. A lot of interesting programmes here:
