It's clearly from the fringes of the conference season but I can't quite tell which political party. Unless the woman is in disguise and is actually Her Highness Beatrix Amelie Ehrengard Eilika, Duchess of Oldenburg, the granddaughter of Hitler's Finance Minister. Beatrix Von Storch to you, she goes strolling through the crowds like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime.

(You can tell by these words that I didn't fully comprehend the clip but that now applies to everything else)

I've just been watching Simon Reeve in Russia. The clever way of editing is such that it can make one think one would like to be him in such places or, if not, there with him as a travelling companion as I have a feeling that we would get on reasonably well. But, more realistically, I think it probable that the extreme weather, the likelihood of armed conflict breaking out at any moment and the two week train journeys are such that television is a better option. Anyhow, an interesting series on a fascinating country which on paper would be impossible to manage given its diversity. In fact, I don't know how anyone runs it. Quite a bit of Tuva in this episode if you missed it. And with an emphasis on throat singing.

The second leg of Simon Reeve's tour of modern-day Russia begins in Siberia and takes him to Russia's far south west and the majestic Caucasus Mountains.

Because the outtakes from Dylan's Born Again records have been released, a pal gave me a copy of a recent rock mag with Dylan stuff and attached to it was a CD of American gospel music which I've been enjoying very much. Among the gems in there, the wonderful Swan Silvertones 'Mary don't you weep'. The song was, of course, one of the inspirations for Paul Simon's 'Bridge over Troubled Water', and Simon used the Swans' leader Rev. Claude Jeter's falsetto on 'Mardi Gras' and on 'Love Me Like a Rock.' But this is wonderful every time.

'In spite of Ourselves' performed by John Prine and Iris DeMent from the recent Americana Awards.

Don't hear enough of Iris DeMent these days, I reckon.

              Excellent stuff.

Chronic skull splitting facial pain at present - the return of trigeminal neuralgia which is no laughing matter - and hardly surprising given the four hours spent in a dentist's chair in three weeks for what feels like major surgery. Anyhow, the amitriptyline will hopefully sort that bit out over the next few days. He doesn't want to see me again until next March unless I need to see him. As luck would have it, my cab driver was not only Albanian but he very much warmed to my conversational topic which was Laver Bariu. We pulled into the car park early. He switched the engine off. I paid. We then sat there for a quarter of an hour when I could have been extremely overwrought enthusing over videos of the great musician via his mobile phone while I was given an education about his music and his life. Even the one of his funeral was taken in my stride. I doubt that he will ever have a similar customer experience again, including if the passenger is Albanian, and I'll certainly not have another passenger experience like it. All very strange, wonderful in its way and meant somehow. I will never forget it.

Sorry to hear about the neuralgia Lat but I did like the Laver Bariu story - I’m not sure his name would spring to my mind when chatting to an Albanian.

I had a terrible experience in an Albanian restaurant in Paris once on Bastille Day, all I could think of was how to get out alive...there’s no musical aspect so I’ll spare you the details.

I don't recall ever knowingly meeting an Albanian but I did think exactly what you said GT; 'typical Lat being immediately able to engage in a conversation about Laver Bariu'...I'd probably have a better chance conversing about Rod Laver. Loved the tracks, Lat. Terrific stuff. Hope the mooth is well on the mend!

Thank you very much to you both.

                    Not so bad today.

Just a lot of twinges in the jaw and feeling like being under a steamroller.

We didn't really have the time to get on to Joe Boyd's disc which was a pity.

Here's something of his past adventures:

Picked up a few records in a library sale...a great Blind Willie Johnson CD among them and since we all like a song about 'The Titanic' in these parts here's the magnificent 'God Moves on the Water'!

That's sad news, Lat. Guaranteed to lift the spirits whenever that song came on the radio from when I first ever heard it. If you are only going to be remembered for one record it couldn't be much better than 'Oh Happy Day'.
