Not 6M, Lat - it was more understandably, I suppose, on Radcliffe's Folky show on 2 as well as DJ F's LJ later that day. Here's the Yorkston/Thorne/Khan version just for a bit balance

And here's another seasonal one, made specially for LJ (Verity) a while back.

I'm glad to say we've got guisers in these parts at the moment, and, of course, some of them are on Youtoob too. This is also a faithful version of the pagan festival from a couple of days ago celebrating death of the old year, rebirth of the new thanks to the Doctor. Perhaps we've a deep-rooted propensity for a Doctor...

Not strictly speaking true but I heard this a couple of months ago on Max, but it turned up today in the car - wonderful version of 'The Terror Time' by Karine Polwart from the tribute to Ewan MacColl record. So atmospheric.

'Red, Hot and Fela', the Fela Kuti tribute came to the front of the CD pile in the car today...it's a bit patchy but when it's good it's wonderful and Kronos Quartet's version of 'Sorrow, Tears and Blood' with Kyp Malone, Tunde Adebimpe and Stuart Bogie is mesmerising, I think. Great to hear it again (and again)...and it's got whistling.

Again, for various random reasons I found myself listening to Omara Portuondo the other day.

The too often unsung heroine of BV SC.

Possibly I'm being lazy not searching out a great solo song of hers, but I'm sure no-one could possibly object to this elegant classic rendition of Quizas Quizas Quizas, Roberto Fonseca on piano and you know who joining her on vocals.

Great stuff, Global - and that Fonseca is a very fine pianist.

Terry Hall is a voice I like a lot but we don't hear much from him...I heard a couple of his tracks with Mushtaq again the other day for the first time in ages...listening now I detect the hand of Damon Albarn in there but it's a crackin' bit of crossover, I think.

Martha Wainwright's soaring yet delicate harmonies take center stage in her performance of elegy "Proserpina," written by her late mother, the legendary folk...

Rosetti was also interested in Proserpina...

I'm more surprised Verity and/or MAK don't play more McGarrigles, given their fondness for French/Canadian music...

Am just catching up with the links on this thread. The Proserpina song is exceptional and a fitting finale. I much prefer Martha when she steers cleer of indie modernism (the song Factory on her debut is the exception). She has a magical voice and it is best suited to a gentle, mysterious lyric. More Kate and less Loudon perhaps, not that I dislike the latter, grittiness and all. There is a link between the live version of Proserpina featuring Kate and the Yorkston version of Little Black Buzzer in that both have unusual, affecting, arrangements. Weirdly, in the case of the latter I can hear a bit of Bolan as he was on Debora which was always an unusual record. The Ivor Cutler original is, of course, inimitable. The Janis Joplin song shows that what goes around comes around. I'm car-less but would quite like a modest little smart car myself, now that it isn't possible to buy a bubble car. The great Momo Wandel track - yes I know this from the time of CG but wouldn't have been able to put a name to it. Thanks - and I will listen to the others shortly.

The moment she combined the earth of indie with a gentler mysticism and got it spot on:

Also re dynasties, Benjamin Biolay, who should write for a Bond film, has a Merc tune:

This is very impressive. She is becoming one of my favourite current folk artists. There is - I seem to say this about one in twenty folk songs - a hint of "She Moves The Fair" and especially "My Lagan Love", both of which I love. Dare I say it, it also has a hint of Scottish eighties mainstream indie about it. And it would segue well live with "King of Birds".

I'm not sure how I missed this album in 2013 but then I didn't realise that the "Red Hot and...." series had run to 14 or 15 releases. I have a vinyl EP from 1990 when I was buying everything by the Pogues. Produced by Steve Lillywhite it features a version of "Miss Otis Regrets" with Kirsty MacColl on vocal and appears to have been taken from the first album "Red Hot and Blue". They started with, among others, Salif Keita and Les Negresses Vertes and it would be interesting to discover the best tracks - and performers - since.

Not unsung here. I love Omara Portuondo. I find her very moving. If Ferrer was Cuba's Nat King Cole then she is Ella although I prefer to think of them in their own right. The link was great and Fonseca very good but you can't beat the late Ruben Gonzalez! The "tape" rolled over to one of my favourite clips of her in older age which I have posted before:

This is another project I missed. You are right that it involves Damon Albarn. Among the list of musicians I was interested to see Zoe Rahman who I principally associate with jazz. Released in 2003, the CD somehow manages to combine the sound of Two Tone and something more global. In 2007, Terry Hall who has been very unwell and in a way I hadn't realised provided vocals for many tracks on the Dub Pistols' album "Speakers and Tweeters". According to Lynval Golding, the door remains open for a reforming of the Specials.

Thanks for that fine round up, Lat...yesterday I was sitting in the car in Arisaig on the West Coast after a couple of days of glorious sunshine, white beaches and wonderful views. Eigg was in full view but there was no reception on the radio. I went digging in the darker recesses of the motor and there I discovered Kulanjan lurking and ready for an outing. Every so often it's great to be reminded what a wonderful collaboration this was.

Have had a look at Arisaig on Google. It looks wonderful and it's good to know there are still places out of FM's reach. We had a bit of snow yesterday but not enough to settle! For some unknown reason, I seem to have a T Rex thing in my mind. Given the link you have posted, I am wondering about their influences. They may have run deeper than I realised!

Wasn't this album one of Barack Obama's favourites? I look forward to hearing which WM The Donald finds fascinating.
