Hmmm.... I'm pretty sure that this is NOT my 'favourite Indian music' ... but, does anybody here remember the SITAR CONCERTO by Ravi Shankar, recorded in the 1970s by Andre Previn and the LSO?
I heard some of it on the car radio (on the 'unmentionable station) a few weeks ago and was distinctly 'underwhelmed' as it seemed to go 'on and on and on' in a desultory sort of way. Near the end ( thank goodness) there were one or two rather inventive bits of tune for the French horns and I had a 'flashback' - suddenly remembering that I had played this piece in or around 1972 at the EMI Abbey Road studio..oh dear

Why, yes, because I posted a version of it on the British and Commonwealth thread on the 9th of this month.

Apologies for lowering the tone but this is surely Public Image Ltd circa "Rise" in an alternative universe? -

Aamir Khan, Twinkle Khanna, Faisal Khan and, erm, Others -

      Dekho 2000 Zaman Aa Gaya - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha_W45qlKN8

Do not adjust your set. We expect to be providing a normal service again soon with "Ring of Bright Water".

Well, this was once recorded by an Amir Khan, that is, the classical musician who was the founder of the Indore Gharana. It has a similar impact on me to the Diabates' kora and also the hammer dulciner and arguably it has the ring of bright water. The santoor - of which Shivkumar Sharma is the master instrumentalist. I do in all seriousness take your point, Tony, about the Shankar piece. That attempt at cross-over isn't wholly successful but I like it well enough and think that it was something that was better done than not done.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Ustad Shafaat Ahmed Khan:

              Raag Hamsadhwani:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Many thanks to all contributors to this thread to date. I haven't been able to listen to all of the music referred to in the posts but am very much looking forward to doing so soon.

                  Many thanks Mr GG.

I have also been listening to your clips of Amarnath Mishra, Sharda Sahai and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan which are all excellent and I will be following Bryn and JC's links next. Can't begin to describe the number of times I have tried to enter into music discussions with shop keepers and taxi drivers of a wide variety of backgrounds. Never gets me anywhere!
