    favourite indian music

I was listen-againing to the All India Radio Words and Music programme, and came across the dhrupad by the Dagar brothers, which I found very evocative.

I have dabbled (as one does:)) in Indian music, without really getting in very deep. I always loved the "For All Mankind" final track of the Gandhi soundtrack, but that was ages ago, and I don't seem to have progressed at all. At some stage I was listening to Hariprasad Chaurasia, but couldn't quite get into it.

Anybody care to share their favourite Indian music?

Hi Arthroceph, Lat seems to be moving into an Indian phase and will, I'm sure, make a few suggestions, but there's still 7 days to listen to World on 3 from South Bank Centre's Darbar Festival of Indian classical music and I thought 'Ragam Tanam Palavi' by Ranjani and Gayatri was wonderful. I think it's about 45 minutes in to the broadcast, though I loved the whole programme.
Lopa Kothari presents music from the 2015 Darbar Festival in London.

The whole of the 1981 All-night Prom was very special, but for me it was Raga Bhairav Bahar as played by Vilayat Khan and Zakhir Hussein that was the apogee. I return to a CD-R transfer of the FM re-broadcast again and again. Both the 1981 and 1983 all-nighters deserve to fill TtN. They would make a nice change from all the other repeats in that schedule.

Your mention of Ragam Tanam Palavi puts me in mind of this glorous album I first got in its double LP manifestation:

            Hi guys

Thanks very much for the recommendations.

            Ref. johncorrigan answer:
Yes, caught the Ragam Tanam Palav, sure sounds great, will dip in again.

            Ref. Bryn answer:
The Raga Bhairav Bahar at the 1981 Proms seem to be available on

There's no radio commentators, and the sound quality is not so hot, so I'm guessing bootleg. It certainly sounds like a prodigious jam session: tabla dominating first part
and sitar taking over for second.
WIll also try out Ramnad Krishnan.

Mr GongGong, thanks for those. I very much like some of the Nusrat tracks that Andy Kershaw would broadcast back in the 80s/90s.

            Cheers!

There were some problems with the sound reinforcement system on the night. I loved the way Vilayat Khan tried to explain some of the variants he was expressing. IIRC it was during this raga that his brother Imrat expressed his appreciation from the audience. Further on the audio quality, yes, I think it may well be a bootleg. There is, I think, somewhat more audience noise than heard over the radio, though I may be mistaken. Otherwise the balance and stereo imaging appears as in the radio broadcast. Also, despite some downloader software claiming to offer 256kbps mp3, that is derived from the 96kbps AAC-LC carried by the YouTube stream.

There was also a wonderful Thumri performed by Zak(h)ir Hussain and Sultan Khan (sarangi) that same night. An incredible demonstration of Zak(h)ir Hussain's virtuosity.

Ah, it was the radio broadcast. The closing announcement is there, at the end of Raga Bhairab Bahar (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes in). Vilayat Khan and Zak(h)ir Hussain then continue with a folk derived item announced by Vilayat Khan.

Thank you so much for finding this on YouTube.
