So pleased we have Charlie in the list - absolutely deserved in my opinion!
Thanks Lat and totally agree about CG - he represents those who have tried to open up the world of music to us fortunate ones.
But another couple of points is that you are an enthusiastic motivator...and you're a finisher. I get things half way and then never get the job done...great skill.

Thank you JC - and that is very kind of you.

It's not World Music as such but it's a masterclass in music and attitude.

I found him inspiring and liked him very much!
Oh yes, jolly well done both - it's great to have a bit of activity in this quiet corner. Let's not get rushed off our feet though eh?

Hmm - if we do another one, then perm any one, or all, of M for Mali, G for Griots or D for the Diabate family.
And here's an early vote for Amy Camus, er, Yma Sumac.
"Bo Mambo" has appeared in a commercial for Kahlua liquor, and was sampled for the song "Hands Up" by the Black Eyed Peas.Known for her astonishing 4 1/2 oct...

My hardanger fiddle CD arrived today - it is a beautiful piece of work, and pleasing to most senses (doesn't smell of much at all )
I think I've spent the last few posts recommending listens to Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh ..well here's another, last for a bit I guess:

it is such a pleasure to buy direct from the artist.

I'll definitely jot that one down for future reference, G - perhaps if we do A-Z of songs that sound like they'd be at home in 'Lost in Space' (TV version).

Just a couple of points to tie up here, and I'm in no rush to end the points of information, but do you think we should send the list to 'Songlines'? I mean, they got us started. But also, would this form a possible playlist - we could start with A and then work along to Z, or vice versa, or we could take it in quartiles, bit at a time. I'm sure we could find some interesting tunes and transfer some of the youtube links onto spotty etc. Take us up till when we re-open the Christmas list. Anyway, just a thought for a Saturday morning.

Thank you for these comments and links.

I am keen to produce a second short list as I believe we have most of the material in the long list and subsequent suggestions. Plus there is a clear steer in the JC list on what is likely to be included for a lot of the letters. I also think the "let's not get rushed off our feet though eh?" advice is useful as while great fun the work was intensive. It needs a break of a few days and then to be undertaken quickly with a light touch. What I will do beforehand is incorporate anything that arose after the "final" long list in the long list to complete it. For example, Arsenio Rodriguez is not on it even though he became A on the short list. The Griots, Yupanqui etc will be added too so we can see the pool of options available.

As for Spotify, this exercise is one of a number of reasons why I haven't been as engaged with it as I was previously. Another was having to adjust to a new computer as I have explained. The membership lapsed for a few weeks but I did join it again. Not to have listened to it for a while is a shame. Consequently, I think a Spotify A to Z list - or lists - is a great idea and it would be helpful to me as a reintroduction. To send the list to Songlines is also worth considering. I just wonder, though, if they would express any interest in it. What we could do is place it on Sounds of the World and ask for comments. It is a small bunch of people there now and it might give them some support in encouraging discussion?

I've started a spotty playlist about our A-Z World Music - I've limited it for the first week to A-G. Thought I'd split the alphabet in 4 and I'll add the next bit next weekend. We'll see how it works. Some letters will have loads of entries, I imagine, while others will be a bit more sparse. Here's the link - never sure which is the best one, but I'll try this.

                      Many thanks JC.

That link works and I have been able to do a 'following'.

OK - what I have done is update the long list in post 186 to include all suggestions that came in after it was initially completed in discussions on what to decide for Short List A. To be complete, I have also added to it the three you have offered this morning, JC, for Short List B. I like those suggestions, especially Guinea, and it is a very encouraging start.

Re Papua New Guinea, what are the obvious representatives? I only have Telek in my CD collection:

                      George Telek - Abebe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6Fs0n54fJg

Also, who is that guy you have posted from an East African island - Madagascar I think? - with an English sounding name?

The long list has still not been declared 'completed' per se as in a fairly leisurely though quick way I want to think about some very last minute inclusions so we can have the best possible pool from which to make further suggestions for Short List B. I'd welcome others doing the same. The cut off point is 10am Monday. It will be the final, final long list then!

For example, I do think Lydia Mendoza should be on it as she released records very early. I would have thought Israel Cachao Lopez and Benny More should be mentioned. Also Brozman/Hirayasu, Chavela Vargas, LDS and Zydeco and maybe even Manu Chao. And I am searching in my mind for a term that might specifically refer to Scottish Gaelic singing?

Chavela Vargas - Que Te Vaya Bonito - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuEO77NZnP4
                      Lydia Mendoza - Ojitos Verdes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhKM_h5YM9I
Manu Chao - Me Llaman Calle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZivK8PmxPWQ
Brozman and Hirayasu - Jin Jin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHtgCp4uFfM
Lhasa De Sela - Cara a la Pared - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-Y_4tW0jnw
                      Zydeco/Clifton Chenier - Zydeco Two Step - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkFJ4-r2SLY

I haven't included any clips of Cachao and More because my guess is that when it comes to Short List B we might think they are too close geographically to Rodriguez in List A!

                        ......actually here is another one.

GT has often mentioned Aboriginal Soul.

I had the privilege of seeing the Black Arm Band but sadly not the late Ruby Hunter as she had to pull out because of ill health. I'd have liked the BAB to have been a bit more 'with their roots' musically. It was too commercial. And Ruby is not at her best in the second clip but that song of hers is a classic. It needs a good folk rendition from a band in 2015.

Re radio, I am going to put in Ritu and Rodigan and vis a vis collaborations Michael Brook, Ry Cooder and Nick Gold.

Also, that yodelling clip is very amusing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wZDU-DDTOU - I think we should include it in a 'World Wayne's World' thread : either mad musical travelling along precisely those lines or crazy head shaking as per the Tarekegn Mulu I posted yesterday - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Szxnm_5K4* - in order to qualify!

*(And for all of the autotune in it, I reckon that guy's got quite a good voice!)

The yodelling Bollywood is not just amusing, it's great, Lat. Loved that Ethiopian vid - great voice, great hair, great laugh. So since we're on amusement here's a bit of Dundonian culture courtesy of St Andrew, with Mick Marra involvement. Not suggesting inclusion just enjoyment...or maybe it's a Scottish thing.

                            Very good!

Did he say "A Single Fish?". That's one of a number of things about going north of Watford. "A fish, chips, pie, mushy peas and scraps please". No posh nonsense about whether you would like haddock or cod. The film also featured some very cool looking cars. Was one a 1962 Austin Standard? Marra died three years ago to last week. It hardly seems possible.

Yes - Justin Valli was the man. As I said, the man with the English and Italian sounding name. How helpful to have another v or a j. And, yes, to the yodelling being great. It is probably the best chance you and GT have of getting my vote for yodelling as I'm not necessarily a great fan of Julie Andrews and may not easily fall into von very clever trapp!

I'm wondering about the terms "port à beul" and "waulking songs" and even the term "orain luaidh". Are any of those the ones where they do that attractive chippy-choppy vocal?

My thoughts tonight are that c could be for Cape Breton, p could be for Protest Songs and s could be for Ska.

The latter goes far wider than it appears. One of my favourite live performances of all time was e for Ernest:

                            Ernest Ranglin:

                            Eb @ Noon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5y9ed7Ny4A

Want to (a) add a few more significant names/areas and (b) expand on some letters. On (a) I suggest Baaba Maal, (Susana) Baca, Balkans, Bhundu Boys, (Jacques) Brel, Buena Vista Social Club, Compay Segundo, Gilberto Gil, (João) Gilberto, Gypsies, Huun-Huur-Tu, Johnny Clegg, Laver Bariu, (Sergio) Mendes, Monks, Paco de Lucia, Ragas, Scotland, Seckou Keita, Senegal, Son, Thomas Mapfumo, Tibet, (Rokia) Traore, Trilok Gurtu and Vusi Mahlasela and as for (b) it is A Capella, Alan Stivell, Amalia Rodrigues, Andy Palacio and Garifuna Collective, (Purandara) Dasa, Diblo Dibala, Djivan Gasparyan, Egypt, Elis Regina, ET Mensah, Etoile de Dakar, (Leo) Ferre, Four Brothers, Iarla O'Lionaird, Irakere, Iry Lejeune, Isicathamiya, Kaba, Kanda Bongo Man, Khaled, Kouyates, Native American Flutes, Newfoundland, Nueva Trova, Waulking Songs, Xavier Cugat, Xavier Rudd and Zouk.

WORKING TOWARDS A SHORT LIST B

The absolutely final Long List is now in Post 194 immediately above this one.

Short List B is to be selected from entries in the absolutely final Long List other than the entries shown in bold which have already been incorporated in the absolutely final Short List A. JC, you have kindly already put forward three suggestions for Short List B and those are shown below. I think what we all might do next as a group is try to place against each letter on this post up to three of the strongest contenders. To take it forward, I will try to do one for each letter - or most letters - and would welcome other people doing the same for which letters they wish from 1 to 26. A strong guide for all of us will be the initial JC list for Short List A because there were some very sensible ideas in it and not all of them were taken up in Short List A. What this bit will do is highlight the best ones and focus minds on those. We can then debate them briefly so that 'up to three' becomes 'one'.

                                A - Albanian Clarinets
B - Buena Vista Social Club
                                C - China
                                D - Drums
                                E - Etoile de Dakar
                                F - Flamenco
                                G - Guinea, Griots
                                H - Hawaii
                                I - Inuits
                                J - (AC) Jobim
                                K - Kaba
                                L - La Bamba/Los Lobos
                                M - Mercedes Sosa
                                N - Native American Flutes
                                O - Okinawa
P - Papua New Guinea, Pygmies
                                Q - Quebecois
                                R - Rai
                                S - Scotland
                                T - Township Jive
                                U - Ute Lemper
                                V - Victor Jara
                                W - WOMAD
                                X - Xavier Rudd
                                Y - Yodelling, Youssou N'Dour
                                Z - Zydeco

NB I have now done one for each letter from the long list and am constrained by my own rules in doing any more. JC - if you wish to alter any of your three that is fine but I think they are all very strong contenders. There is a deliberate doubling up in what I have done and also some radical choices so a fair few of mine - possibly most - won't get through! Also, many of mine aren't 'mine' in that they were put forward by other people and even rated highly in the excellent JC list for Short List A. I would really prefer not to take on new names/genres at this stage as we do now have a very big pool but we can swap letters if you prefer, eg put an artist with initials YN that is currently under Y into N instead!
