Catrin Finch, mainly known to us through her previous album with Seckou Keita, has a new solo release available - Tides.

In a totally non-ironic way here is the link for it on Spotify

    and YouTube

think the live performance of this track is better than the somewhat overproduced and schmaltzy version on the album

Proceeds from this track (presumably via streaming services and proportionally off album) go to Water Aid, which makes me ok about a bit of schmaltz...

It's a little bit Enya and it also sounds like she is making a pitch for more television and film soundtrack work but I like it well enough as it's harp!

Had a wee listen in on Mark Coles from a few weeks back and he played this old one from a new record described as Bombay London Groove. It's a version of Jumpin' Jack Flash by Ananda Shankar on Sitar...and I get the impression there's a moog in there. Grand!

...he also played this from a record of 80 year-old Russian Yiddish songs updated by Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi. What's not to like!

Here's an article worth reading about MC who popped up with his serious head on R4 the other day. Lopa in the shed, MC for Wo3 please

Mark Coles is on Mixcloud. Listen for free to their radio shows, DJ mix sets and Podcasts

When I was a kid I loved Richmal Crompton's William books so I was delighted to hear him play 'William and Jumble' by Sarah Hayes - don't look her up on youtube, you get a bodybuilder - a great wee track I thought. Also he played Marry Waterson and David Jaycock's 'Caught on Coat Tails' - I know you must love it, GT. I certainly did.
Then he played the ever wonderful Tsegue Maryam Guebrou and informed that she's playing her first ever UK gig this week...at 91...out of the convent. Wouldn't have minded sitting in her presence. But so this fits with the theme of the thread a bit of 70s music from Mauritius from a forthcoming compilation of Sega - not sure I've ever heard Mauritian music but I really enjoyed this one.
Taken from 'SOUL SOK SEGA'Compiled By La Basse Tropicale. Out now on Strut.Order: http://lnk.to/SoulSokSegaA moody soul sega fusion from the band Les Stardus...

Coles for Wo3...time for a campaign!

Oh good lord. Where was she performing? I would have loved to have seen her. Hope there will be a clip somewhere. Agree on Mark Coles. "Just William" - oh yes - I used to laugh hysterically when read the books and can do even now on a good day when listening to it performed. Now you have reminded me, it was my parents' post 1950s version of a tablet for a wide range of ills. At times, its impact via laughter was miraculous. Anyhow, froots have just published their favourite albums of 2015 and I will post a few here in the coming days attempting to focus mainly on the ones we missed. In the meantime, I'm re-posting this one because for them to have it as low as joint 18th is absolutely blimmin' ridiculous:

Bayarbaatar Davaasuren from his record "The Art of Mongolian Khoomii" - heard a track today called Minii Eej. Couldn't find that but hope this live track will do in the meantime.

Thanks Lat...great selection. Great guitar on the Pat Thomas, and that Bixiga 70 look like they'd be a gas to see live...great track - the horns reminded me a bit of Chicago Transit Authority before they morphed MOR. But that Samba Toure track is wonderful - missed that. Will investigate further.

Thanks for those comments John. A few more before I turn to folk.

                              From 2015:

                              From 2016:

Baaba Maal who continues to challenge on his latest album. I remember when the CD "Television" was released. It was interesting but it wasn't enjoyed by purists. The latest set includes autotune but I like what I have heard of it so far. The track "Peace" is surely influenced by Van Morrison's "Song of Being a Child"? Certainly the two tracks would segue.

Baaba is in fine form during this Celtic Connections round up. Wonderful song by Kris Drever in there...what a voice. Also beautiful piece by Julie Fowlis and a rousing song on slavery by Ms Giddens, she of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. And something fine and Breton at the end from the R3 stage - couldn't decide if it was Brittany or Cape Breton but it was v good.
