A one-time regular on Wo3, Mary Gauthier, has just released a new record that's getting a wee bit attention. She's been doing song writing sessions with U.S. Military veterans as far I can determine. Hmm it’s tricky to post an image of the redundant flag of the Laayoune province (mainly because they’re all in a format not supported by this forums software .svg if anyone is interested ) but this is the one I’d choose to see flying whilst listening to that.
Saharan flags are a tricky topic.
imagine this flapping in a strong wind across the desert reaches under a boiling sun. Your car battery is about to run out, meaning the end of electric music for the day....or, more likely now it seems, you’re driving a fast car to the nightclub to play your latest songs and barely notice an old tattered flag stuck in a window of a empty building...

There's a track by Koum Tara on the most recent Songlines playlist. Great mixture of North African sounds and rhythms with almost Caribbean jazz. Can't find it on YT but this is the most recent thing there from about a year ago. I absolutely love the vocals.

Talking about dependable labels, those nice people at Analog Africa are releasing Africa Scream Contest 2 - Benin 1963-1980, ten years on from the rather great 'Africa Scream Contest. They describe it as a 'treasuretrove of Vodoun-inspired Afrobeat heavy funk crossover greatness'. Here is a rather excellent example:

Small Island, Big Song is a project that has seen Aussie Tim Cole and Taiwanese BaoBao Chen travel the island groups of the Pacific and the Indian Ocean recording indigenous musicians, partly to explore the Austronesian migration theory that many Oceanic Cultures originated in Taiwan. The project tries to create musical links from places as diverse as Hawaii, Borneo, Madagascar, Rapa Nui, New Zealand.
