Newly released / found music of a certain sort

Lemn Sissay seems to be fairly ubiquitous these days...I seem to hear him on radio with extreme regularity. This issue of Songlines has him choose the playlist, heavily weighted towards Ethiopia with a couple of Aster Aweke tunes in there - also among them is this by Meklit Hadero, of Ethiopian descent living in the US. Terrific voice.

Was Lemn Sissay on both R3 Breakfast and Newsnight during the recent Poetry Day? I think he may have been. While the video for Meklit Hadero suggests pop - and I've dug out a fair few Ethiopian pop songs that have worked for me on some level - musically it is more substantial with a rock-almost-blues sort of groove. The other day Mr Kershaw said something along the lines that for over ten years no new album had blown him away and that the last one to do so was by Tinariwen. I could see this appealing to many fans of Tinariwen and, say, Justin Adams and Juldeh Camera or Ali Farka Toure. I reckon it is on that "strand". Initially I was confused by the reference to Samuel Yirga who is such an outstanding piano player he should have been a nun. Where was he? Then I realised he was responsible for the Manzarek style keyboards stuff or at least I assume so. Yirga has also collaborated with Dub Colossus, Creole Choir of Cuba and Nubian Arc so he is a versatile musician. He's been backed by Real World but here is more about sixdegreesrecords:

Very good - and yes he's still on form, JC - but something weird happened there. I was listening to it while browsing the net and another song started quietly.

Except I didn't initially realise that it was another song that was playing at the same time.

I hadn't seen either of these before. They are very good. I feel that Natalie Merchant is almost becoming the American June Tabor. Tabor has, of course, covered "Verdi Cries".
